Manga Review: Madoka Magica Homura's Revenge Volume 1 Part 1: Room for one more?

 Well apparently this is finally happening, with this and this mobile game getting an anime adaptation I think it's time for me to get serious about covering the spin-off mangas again. Especially considering that some of the characters introduced in these books; including Kazumi, Oriko, Yuma etc are involved in this game I figure that I need to get back to work. While this series doesn't feature any new characters it does ask a question that most fans have been asking once they learned about Homura's time travel powers. "What if Homura took Madoka back in time with her before she made the contract?" This story attempts to answer that but honestly kind of stumbles with the response. 

 We open with the familiar scene of Homura getting her ass kicked by Walpurgisnacht when Madoka says that she's going to make her wish. But this time Homura has a revelation, so she grabs Madoka for a hug and takes her with her back through time. 

"The f**k just happened?!"

 Homura wakes up in the usual hospital room and thinks to herself why she did what she did.

So you didn't even know it would work?! DUMBASS!!! It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Madoka accidentally let go, got stranded in the feudal era and had to hitch a ride back with the Dende-damned Ninja Turtles, gold star thinking right here.

 But thankfully Madoka was still in school when Homura came inside the class and best of all her theory worked!

 The two bolt for the nurses office and along the way Homura starts to chew Madoka out for nearly making the wish, but Madoka suggests that with her future knowledge she can help Homura save Mami, Kyoko and Sayaka.

"Hey Madoka how many fingers am I holding up? That's the exact amount of craps I give about these two, ya dingus."

 But since Madoka has her future knowledge she can back up Homura's arguments to the three to help keep them alive; she figures that it could work and agrees. Later on Madoka and Sayaka head for the music store and she waits for Kyubey's telepathic plea for help. She does hear him but he catches her off guard by telling her to meet him where they first met. So she heads to the construction area where Kyubey and Homura are waiting for her. He explains that when Homura took Madoka back through time Kyubey managed to grab on and so he retained his memories of the last time line too. 

 Kyubey says that he's all for their plan of changing the future but the two aren't stupid and dispute his crap; but they do still need the proper events to play out before they can be changed so Homura knows exactly what to do next.

"Did you just spin kick him? I know right, I always wanted to do that. Please don't do it again. My body, my rules!"

 Right on cue Sayaka shows up, uses the fire extinguisher on Homura, they end up in Gertrude's Labyrinth and get attacked by the most iconic familiars in the franchise aka the demon mustaches!

 Madoka knows the drill they get attacked, Mami saves them, brings them into the Magical Girl training course blah blah blah. She saves them and the first chapter ends with Kyubey swearing to make Madoka into a magical girl this time. Chapter 2 starts with Mami about to transform but not before Madoka jumps to give her a big big hug. After the familiars are dealt with Homura asks if Mami's all right. But Mami quite blatantly tries to play it cool, essentially "nope nope it's all good here everything's under control here, now; how're you?"

 Afterwords Madoka tells Homura that events played out pretty much like before except that Kyubey covered for Madoka's slip of the tongue as an attempt for the two to trust him, but they're still not buying it. While Madoka gushes over seeing Mami in action again with hindsight Homura brings the mood down by reminding her that when she fights Charlotte at the hospital she's doomed. While Madoka does suggest keeping Mami from fighting it Homura reminds her that unless the witch is dealt with the hospital will become her buffet table. So she plans on beating Mami to the punch to save her from the witch, but there is a tiny, tiny white problem. THEY DISCUSS THIS PLAN WITH THE WHITE DEMON RAT RIGHT BEHIND THEM!!! 

 So of course on the next day when the Grief Seed is ready to hatch Mami shows up almost instantly to follow Sayaka into the Labyrinth. Because a little white rat told her where it would be, and more as showcased when she tries to use her ribbon lock trick on Homura.

What?! How can she move within the frozen time?!

 Mami then engages Homura and manages to overpower her with another trick she stole from another hero. 

"Dai Kaigan, Nobunaga, Omega Drive!"

 She manages to jam Homura's shield with her ribbon bullets and lock her up as usual. 

Laugh it up fuzz ball. Wait a minute if Incubators don't have emotions don't you all think him being so prideful is more than a tad odd?

 Kyubey tells Mami to finish Homura off but of course she won't and brushes it off. But when Homura tries to warn her she just walks off with Madoka. Even when Madoka tries to tell Mami her ego is so inflated by Kyubey and her victory against Homura she refuses to listen.

She's so freaking dead.

 So chapter 2 ends with Mami and Madoka making it to Sayaka, Charlotte appears and Madoka swearing to herself that she'll save Mami no matter what. Chapter 3 opens with Mami fighting Charlotte and going as usual, while that's going on Homura struggles to break free when Kyubey comes around to gloat some more. He says that he's here to free Homura so she can save Mami. Homura of course asks why the hell he would, he responds that with Mami dead her overall goal would be far more difficult. So she drops a hunting knife from her hammer-space shield so he can cut her down.

Gee, it's almost as if Kyubey was an untrustworthy character or something.

 Back to the main fight it looks like Mami's about to have her head bitten off like an animal cracker. Madoka however, dives towards Mami and saves her. She creates a barrier around Sayaka and Madoka and goes after Charlotte again with a clear mind and no distractions. She notices the regeneration trick so she forces Charlottes' mouth open and teaches it a very important lesson. That, no matter what time line, universe or bra size there is always one constant.

 That's when Homura and Kyubey arrive (Homura says a normal knife wouldn't be enough to kill her but he still could have just climbed up and broke your Soul Gem dumbass!) But that gives Charlotte the opportunity it needed to kill Mami. And Homura couldn't have stopped time to get her out of the way because? Oh right this now an idiot plot never mind. So our chapter ends with Homura killing Charlotte, taking her Grief Seed and telling Sayaka that it only belongs to Magical Girls.

Gee, its almost as if this whole situation could have been prevented if if you stopped time to survey the situation instead of barging in and potentially distracting Mami OH WAIT!! And yes I will ride your ass on this, Phrasing!

 So those were the first 3 chapters of Homura's revenge. For those who don't want to have the rest of the story spoiled here's my overall thoughts. The artwork is pretty damn good, there's much more attention to detail in the backgrounds this time with the artist managing to replicate the looks of the witches and Labyrinths pretty well. The humans also look cute and distinctive; looking pretty close to their anime depictions though with a different design for the eyes. I'm not sure what it is maybe they're just more expressive or the faces are slightly different but it is pretty damn close.

 The story however is where it has its faults. For those who've read this; the first two chapters are more leaning towards this being a comedy. But right when chapter 3 comes around the tone changes with a rather distinctive clunk. With that change the characters actions will have to be put under more scrutiny. As such almost everyone is acting like an idiot, specifically Homura, she Madoka and Kyubey know what will happen in a months time yet she openly discusses her plans with Madoka right in front of the creature trying to undermine her plans. Like I said before this has become an idiot plot and it only gets worse from here.

Tokusatsu Review: Uchu Sentai Kyuuranger vs Space Squad Part 1: Excelsior!

In memory of Stanley Martin Leiber Aka Stan "The Man" Lee
 December 28th 1922-November 12th 2018

 Now before I talk about this movie there’s a recent event that needs to be addressed. Mr Stan Lee was an icon, whether through direct creation or with assistance from his various collaborators such as Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko he helped create some of the most iconic and long lasting characters in comics. From Spider-Man to Dr strange to the X-men and the Fantastic Four Stan’s influence can be seen not just in Marvel but all modern comics. For today’s purposes he was the man responsible for Super Sentai as it is today. After Marvel collaborated with Toei to produce the Spider-man Tokusatsu series Toei drew inspiration from that show, namely Spider-man’s giant robot the Marveler and borrowed the concept to revive the Sentai series after JAKQ Dengektai was cut short due to executive meddling due to Parent Watch groups complaining about the show’s more “graphic” nature.

 Originally Toei was going to adapt Captain America but that project was recycled for the Sentai project now rebranded as Super Sentai to differentiate it from Himitsu Sentai Goranger and JAKQ since they were created by Shotaro Ishinomori and thus under his name. But Stan’s influence on Sentai doesn’t end there, we could have gotten Sentai adaptations here in the states before Saban got lucky with Power Rangers. Originally Stan was trying to get either a dub or adaptation of Sun Vulcan but was rejected. So yes, without Stan Lee we wouldn’t have Super Sentai or even Tokusatsu as we know it today for good and for ill, and if people had listened to him we could have had much more Sentai content to inspire and entertain then we do today. So Stan, no matter what anyone says, you were the true believer and made true believers of us all, in that anyone can be a hero, all of humanity is equal and that righteousness and justice will always triumph over those whose hearts are only filled with evil, hatred and bigotry, to you we say, excelsior!

Well enough of the good stuff time to talk about a rookie legacy hero dealing with a group of 11 morons being dragged down by an even bigger moron who would most likely be the exact opposite of Stan’s super hero ideology. Though not right away as we open on another of the 12 Apostles of Genmaku finalizing his plan to the big boss, Fumein.

Who honestly looks like a more mobile and combat focused Alpha 5.

 However his plans are intercepted by Ninja Jiraiya (last seen looking like a dumbass with the Ninningers) and Space Sheriff Shaider. Before the two can put the Space Shinobi down he jumps through a dimensional hole and begins his plans to conquer an alternate universe. (Even though the movie keeps saying Galaxy it's really an alternate universe, that's the level of dumb we're dealing with here people, they can't tell the difference between a Galaxy and a universe.) Specifically the universe of the Kyuuranger, since it's been established that Kyuuranger takes place in an alternate universe keeping the main universe safe from Dumbluck's stupidity.

 Speaking of said universe the story picks up 4 years after the defeat of their big bad Don Armage. Everyone seems to have moved on with their lives and are enjoying the piece. Including the former Houoh Soldier Tsurugi Ohtori who's now the president of the new Galactic Federation and introduces new devices called NeoKyuutamas to a press conference which is basically a limitless Deus Ex Machina device. Which means it's perfect for an evil faction to steal the four prototypes for their malicious purposes, oh look, someone working for an evil organization stealing them for malicious purposes. But the thief is confronted by Spyro the Dumbass Dragon who reveals herself to be Yera Allon who only gets away because Spyro threw out his back after tripping on the unconscious guards, our mentor ladies and gentlemen!

 We then cut to Dumbluck meeting back up with Robo Bison before his 999th total defense match where the two catch up on how everyone's doing. While Dumbluck has been ignoring his duties as a king and has spent the last four years traveling (like the irresponsible moron that he is!) Leman Russ has a wife and kid meaning that his species won't go extinct so great for him, Sasuke Clone #3472 and some of the others are working with Spiro's organization Rebellion keeping the good fight going while Luigi Mario's restaurant chain is taking off like a rocket.  But while they start talking about Yera the news comes on about how she stole the Neo Kyuutama, so yeah awkward. But not as awkward as Tsurugi giving Sasuke Clone, Kurumi and Pine Tree (Koguma Skyblue) orders to bring her in so he can her her side of the story.

 But unless that story starts off with "this evil Space Ninja forced me to help him" I doubt you've got that much a defense case since we then see Yera giving Demost the NeoKyuutamas. So what does he do now that he has these incredibly powerful devices? He uses them like the Deus Ex Machina orbs that they are and resurrect four powerful General grade villains (at least two of which should be impossible). He brings back Mele from Gekiranger, Basco from Gokaiger, Escape from Go-busters and Juzo from Shinkenger.

 Ok, starting from the top, one they're in an alternate universe where these guys never existed so how the hell was Demost able to resurrect them? Two, Mele and Rio were heavily implied to have reincarnated after they were killed by Long at the end of Gekiranger so how the hell did she come back? I mean yeah she showed up for the Legendary War at the opening of Gokaiger but so did every other dead ranger so I guess God gave them a one time revival to take part in that war or something, best explanation I could come up with. Third, Escape has no soul to revive, she's an AI created by Messiah, and Messiah and the Vaglas aren't like the Geth from Mass Effect or Reploids from Mega Man X where their AI has progressed to the point of actually being mistaken for human, in other words these units do not have a Soul. Basco and Juzo I don't have an issue with though mostly because I never saw Shinkenger and thus don't know how things went with Juzo but I am not substituting what happened with Decker in Power Rangers Samurai for obvious reasons. But in short, less than 8 minutes in you've shat the bed movie.

 Also theses choices of revived bad guys make very little sense as apparently the spell only works on souls who have some form of lingering regret like the Revival Jutsu from Naruto but again these four make no sense. Maybe Basco and Juzo since Basco's a fun loving anarchist and Juzo is a bloodthirsty maniac respectively so maybe they just want more fun and carnage. But again Escape is an AI with no actual humanity. Hell even Mele points out that her resurrection makes no sense since she only cares for earning the love of her master Rio, but Demost fixes that with a good old fashioned brainwashing spell and sends the five on their way to attack the Kyuurangers.

 Basco starts off by attacking Sasuke Clone, Kurumi and Pine Tree claiming that he's working under Yera's orders, and they believe him like the morons that they are. Because this obviously untrustworthy Jack Sparrow knock-off looks like he would definitely be telling the truth about something like this, even though they fought beside each other and have known each other for at least 5 years and thus should know better, everyone in this movie is an idiot I thought you should know. While Escape launches a similar attack at Luigi Mario's restaurant Dumbluck and Robo Bison make tracks back to Earth to check in with Tsurugi and learn more. Along the way they run into a certain pervert in navy blue as well as Mele. As for Bootleg Spock and Josuk3PO they actually run into Yera but before they can talk Juzo covers her escape and duke it out with the two.

 The villains and Yera retreat but not before the perv, though the power of sexual assault and being a major grade A creep manages break though Mele's brainwashing just a bit before she withdraws as well. The perv introduces himself to Dumbluck and Robo Bison as Karasuma Shuu aka Space Sheriff Shaider which Dumbluck recognized after remembering his encounter with Geki. Proving that the two are friends Dumbluck takes Shuu with him to see Tsurugi. The group finally meet up and compare notes, though to make things complicated Bootleg and Josuk3PO arrive with a recording of their fight with Yera, Demost and Juzo; Shuu recognizing the Space Ninja from before. Knowing that Yera appears to be collaborating with a notorious criminal Tsurugi does the regrettable yet correct thing of putting an APB for her arrest.

 But of course since we can't have logic be a thing Dumbluck objects. Now normally he'd be right but the evidence is clear cut, now while they don't know the context behind this situation the facts are that she's infiltrated a government research center, stole four prototype power sources, has been seen collaborating with a notorious criminal and attacked her former comrades without any explanation. As for the defense all Dumbluck has is "don't you trust her you traitor?!" Not exactly an ironclad defense. Besides as Tsurugi points out a former hero turned criminal and the newly elected president who was her comrade not trying to stop her would undermine the new government that the people have placed their futures in after living under the tyranny of Jark Matter.

 Now anyone who's seen Gurren Lagann would point out that this sounds similar to the second half of the show where the Anti-Spiral attacked and Nina awoke as their harbinger. In that show, Simon later was arrested by Rossiu to quell the population after the initial Anti-Spiral attack to prepare the Ark Gurren for an emergency evacuation of the planet. The difference between then and now is that Simon went along with it; even agreeing to fight the Anti-Spiral with bombs installed into Gurren Lagann because he had to make sure that Rossiu's plan worked since he knew what was at stake and could see the bigger picture. Dumbluck by contrast can't see farther than his nose because he's a self-righteous moron who doesn't know the first thing about responsibility. Remember that he's apparently a King, yet he spent the last four years after Jark Matter's defeat wandering around space like he did when the show started, so in summation Dumbluck, you're a fucking moron!

 But because stupidity is contagious Robo Bison and Pine Tree go with him. So the muscle bound moron robot who exercises (even though he's a robot just like in Headmasters) and the pre-teen kid are the only ones on Dumbluck's side. If that doesn't tell you how wrong this putz is I have no idea. So after all of this idiocy I need a break. Come back next week as we skip past the fight scenes and learn why Yera is even working with Marvin the Ninja in the first place, spoilers it's really stupid.

Personal Post: Top 10 monsters in fiction I can’t take seriously Part 1

 Yep ghosts and ghouls it’s that time of the year again for monster malarkey. Last year I talked about some of my favorite monsters, from their designs to the personalities and backstories I just loved most of them. Now this year is where I go the polar opposite, and let me tell you this is going to be the hardest list. Mostly due to me not really encountering a whole lot of monsters that really bore me or I honestly just point and laugh at. Like last year, one monster per franchise, have to have actually seen them and state why I find them so hard to take seriously.

#10 Chucky from Childs Play

 I believe that everyone is familiar with the possessed toy idea. It’s a good one when done right but in the case of Charles Lee Ray it tends to vary depending on what movie he’s in. Charles is a serial killer who just so happens to be a practitioner of Voodoo (not real voodoo but just roll with it.) One night he gets shot by a cop and his only chance of survival is to transfer his soul into a nearby doll. But he wants a real body so throughout the series he plans to transfer his soul into a new human body so he can resume his spree.

 The first movie was just fine but as it went on things just got more and more ridiculous to the point where you can’t take him seriously at all. I mean when you show up on WWE, you know any real credibility is flushed down the crapper. I believe that everyone that hasn’t checked out of this franchise with Bride of Chucky, they would have with Seed of Chucky. Some horror franchises have the potential to last a long time. But for Chucky the killer doll I believe that once was more then enough, so yes I did just fuck with the chuck and what’s he gonna do about it?

Yeah that's what I thought.

#9 Necron from FF9

 For those who don’t know I’m not the biggest fan of Final Fantasy. I’ve played a few of them and they’re just not for me. But the one I can definitely claim to be my favorite is undoubtedly Final Fantasy 9. With the technical innovation of the PS1 era engine combined with a classic, uncomplicated story, fantastical setting, likable characters and solid (but too easy and some what BS; looking at you Trance system) combat system it’s an underrated classic of the series. However the final boss, for me is the crack in the otherwise finely crafted gem of a game. 

 So far the major villain is Kuja, the fabulous homunculus who has been trying to destroy both the worlds of Terra and Gaia in an act of spiteful and mad vengeance against the wishes of his creator Garland. Zidane and his party manage to reach him and defeat him but it’s not the end. Suddenly this flying blue monster comes right out of nowhere and is all like “hey I’m the final boss now, deal with it!” We have absolutely no idea where this guy came from, what his motivations are, nothing is established about him or what he’s even here for. It’s like he just came in from a completely different game just to mess up this one. 

 Say what you will about Yu Yevon from FF 10 in terms of being a final boss and believe me there's a lot to say how much of a horrible final boss it is. But at least Yu Yevon was established and has actual relevance to the story of FF 10. Necron on the other hand literally comes out of nowhere. It’s not enough to ruin FF9 for be but Necron was basically the final boss version of a big lipped alligator moment.

#8 Dream Eaters from Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance

 Yet another enemy type for Kingdom Hearts that aren’t Heartless because the design, Nomura and plot said so. Say what you will about the Nobodies and the Unversed but at least they had plot relevance to their games. The Nobodies are the leftover Body and Soul left behind when strong person’s heart becomes a Heartless and the Unversed are the manifestation of Vanitas’ negative emotions (for the most part, looking at you Symphony Master, Cursed Coach and Spirit of the Magic Mirror.) But the Dream Eaters only serve as party members and enemies for Sora and Riku to respectively party with and fight during their mark of mastery exam in the dream worlds. Apparently they’re just the manifestations of Darkness in the sleeping worlds since they’re cut off from all outside channels, apparently not even the Heartless can get into them, ignoring that we encounter Ansem, Xemnas and Xigbar during our time there but whatever.

 I mean yeah the Spirit Dream Eaters are necessary to party with and unlock new abilities. But aside from that and being cute little battle brothers they’re just a gimmick to take advantage of the 3DS and PS4’s touch screen controls and that’s about it. Plot wise the Nightmares don’t even do anything different that couldn’t have been filled by a Heartless. Let’s see, the Heartless were gathering hearts to create Kingdom Hearts for Xehanort’s incarnations, the Nobodies serve Organization XIII to gain hearts of their own and the Unversed were used by Vanitas to lure Ven, Terra and Aqua away, make Terra and Ven stronger for their eventual parts in Xehanort’s plan and are extensions of Vanitas himself. The Dream Eaters have nothing in terms of plot relevancy, just glorified Pokémon knockoffs and that’s it, sorry little dudes you're cute and all, but that's about it see you in Kingdom Hearts 3.

#7 The Mummy (2017)

 These days cinematic universes are the big gimmick that Hollywood wants to cash in on. Aside from the MCU that took several years of planing, preparation and let’s face it prayer before they got Iron Man out the door, everyone else who tried this formula rushed it out the door or assigned the absolute wrong person to set the tone for their universes and the results were complete disasters. The Mummy was the result of the former instead of the latter. Universal tried to revive the original cinematic universe with the classic movie monsters. Their first and last attempt was a second reboot of the Mummy and you know it's a bad movie when I can take the series with The Rock as a CGI scorpion monster more seriously.

 Now say what you will about the Brendan Fraser series but it seemed to be more focused on being an action movie and doing its own thing instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. 2017 Mummy was them trying to reinvent the wheel and they wound up with a triangle. Nothing about this Mummy makes sense, from her origin, her powers, her weaknesses, motivation nothing adds up, if you try to apply the mythological inspiration or either of the previous movie incarnations, nothing adds up either. It honestly feels like they lost the original plot and instead decided to make an even worse version of Enchantress from Suicide Squad. Universals shareholders were promised their own MCU and the result was Tom Cruse with ambiguous superpowers and a zombie best buddy, enough said.

#6 Harvest #3 from DC Comics

 What a horrible waste of a good character design. I wasn’t reading Teen Titans during their New 52 iteration but thanks to Linkara’s massive review of the Crossover event “The Culling” we were all introduced to the dumbass known only as Harvest. While he did have a good look his actions and backstory are what landed this idiot on the list. Apparently he was a Colonel from the future who fought in a war against Metahumans. So he decided to go back in time to eliminate Metahumans, he decided to do this by kidnapping superpowered Teenagers, have them fight to the death and recruit the winners to his team.

 Now this is stupid for many reasons, the most pertinent of which is that why would anyone agree to work with this idiot? See when Blackbeard from One Piece did this with the Level 6 Impel Down prisoners, he wanted the strongest of the worst criminals in the world to join his crew and help him takedown Whitebeard. They were all criminals with life sentences doomed to be erased from history due to their crimes and were just as sick and depraved as he is so it makes sense why the prisoners would want to join him, not so for Teenagers who were kidnapped, forced to live in hellish conditions where they had to fight to the death for the recruiting process of the dumbass who put them there in the first place! Also when the heroes eventually fought him he kept rambling on about how he was actually a good guy for doing all of this. Which was elaborated after the Culling, too little too late, but don’t worry apparently even when his entire operation was falling apart around him is was all according to cake. 

 Even with all of the events that he couldn’t have possibly accounted for, had future knowledge or was even there for it was all part of his master plan. See when Master Xehanort did this schtick he only did it relatively sparingly and you could see how he could have planed everything out in his favor, but when Harvest does it he doesn’t come off as this grand Machiavellian schemer, he just seems like a dumbass over his head playing spin doctor! Also saving the future by kidnapping and torturing teenagers, now does that sound like a hero to you? If not then I just have one question.

 Thankfully Harvest and his nonsense seems to have been jettisoned along with everything else from the New 52 when DC Rebirth happened, good. Yeah this is starting to drag on a bit again and we have four weeks this month on top of Halloween day so I've decided to split this into two parts again. Sorry but I feel that I shouldn't drag this article out longer then it needs to. Plus I have some choices that I feel need some reconsidering and more thought. Besides I know that some of the choices that I will be making are going to have people after my blood for various reasons so I need to make some preparation for the nuclear fallout some of my top choices will bring me.

March to Infinity: Captain America The First Avenger: A real American hero!

 After some Asgardian antics we move back to the 1940's with the star spangled man with a plan, Captain America! As is tradition I'll point you in the direction of Linkara's review of the very first appearance of the Power Punching Patriot with one of the most iconic and wonderful covers for a first issue you could ask for.

 Now you think that making a compelling movie focused around a guy who punched Hitler right in his goddamn jaw on his debut cover would be as easy as farting but then again you'd be surprised how often when you think its a fart it turns out to be a very loose stool. Now come on we've all bet on a fart and lost at least once in your life don't deny it! Now you might be thinking only of the 1990 Captain America movie which was a nasty piece of work which both the Nostalgia Critic and Cinema Snob can attest to.

 But that's nothing compared to the flaming hot liquid butt fudge that was the Reb Brown made for T.V movies the Spoony One covered many years ago. (I hope he gets back in the game, just take as much time as you need man, these sort of things take time.)

 Ok I couldn't find part 2 of the 2nd Reb Brown review but yeah it's still really bad, trust me! But yeah Captain America while one of the most iconic superheroes ever was handled by some real grade-a holes before Marvel brought him home. Also for some reason they decided to cast Chris Evens as Steve. I mean it worked but let's not forget that the last time he was in a Marvel movie it was as Johnny Storm in those two mediocre Fantastic Four movies. I mean first Chris Evens and now Michael B. Jordon, at this rate it's only a matter of time till Jay Underwood finds his on screen redemption.

 Back on topic, as per usual there were some major changes made from the comic to the big screen. Like for example Bucky Barnes is the same age as or older then Steve and isn't the regiment mascot, Steve doesn't get into the battlefield right away and they skip straight to him being frozen for 70 years or so. As for the rest that's what this review/ recap is for isn't it? So our story begins in 1942 where a Nazi officer named Johann Schmidt (played by Hugo Weaving) acquires a powerful artifact called the Tesseract and brings it back to his lab. Schmidt is the head of Hitler's R&D department Hydra and after he and his head scientist Arnim Zola (played by Toby Jones) decide that Hitler and his third reich were a waste of time split Hydra into its own unique organization after killing several Nazi officers with a Tesseract powered weapon.

 Cut to America with young Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evens) trying to join the Army and serve his country. But the problem is that he looks like somebody could break his arms like twigs if they so much as accidentally bump into him. While he and his best buddy James "Bucky" Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan) attend a worlds fair Steve tries to enlist again but is accepted this time to be the guinea pig of Dr Abraham Erskine (played by Stanley Tucci) and his Super Solder project. After proving his nobility and self-sacrificing bravery to Erskine; Agent Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) and Chester Phillips (played by Tommy Lee Jones) he's chosen for the procedure and becomes a Super Solder.

 But a Hydra agent kills Erskine and flees but kills himself with a cyanide pill after Steve catches him. Not knowing what to do with Steve now that Erskine and his formula are gone Senator Brandit wants to just make Steve into a patriotic mascot to promote the war effort as Captain America. But eventually Steve's had enough and when he hears that Bucky's unit is captured he takes matters into his own hands. With the help of Agent Carter and Howard Stark (played by Dominic Cooper) he breaks into the Hydra base, frees the P.O.Ws and even sees Schmidt who revels his identity as the Red Skull (a side effect of taking a prototype of Erskine's formula) and finally earns the respect of Phillips.

 This starts a campaign of Captain America and his Howling Commandos busting down Hydra bases and pissing on Red Skulls shoes, that is until Bucky fell to his death on a mission. But thanks to Zola spilling the beans Cap finds the location of Red Skulls main base and his ultimate weapon. So he and his forces attack the base and Cap chases the Red Skull to the deck of his ship where after accidentally touching the Tesseract the Red Skull is either destroyed or forcibly teleported into the sky by a mysterious blue column of light. But Steve has to steer the ship off course before it reaches New York and the onboard missiles detonate, so he crashes the ship into the Arctic freezing himself in the process. So the story ends with Howard recovering the Tesseract, Peggy is left behind with her ABC spin off show and Steve is recovered by Nick Fury in 2011 more annoyed about missing his date with Peggy then anything.

 To sum up Captain America The First Avenger is definitely one of the shining jewels of the MCU. A great period story and character piece of one of the greatest heroes of Marvels library. Of all the phase one Marvel movies this was definitely one of the more refreshing at least aesthetically. Sure Asgard looked amazing but you can tell that was mostly in CG (really good CG but still CG) the 1940's esthetic really was on point in this one, from the buildings, the music and general decor were just aces in this movie. But this is no surprise considering this was made by Joe Johnston who worked on The Rocketeer and the first two Indiana Jones movies, so he knows a thing or two about capturing the period of a setting.

 Another of this movies best strengths is setting up the character of Steve Rogers and why he is Captain America. Erskine knew that in order to not make the same mistake as Red Skull he knew he had to find a man who had a noble and righteous heart. When he asks Steve why he wanted to enlist he wasn't just looking for some glory hound thug who wanted to kill Nazis he was looking for someone who knew what it meant to be weak and wanted strength not to attack, conquer and invade but protect and support. If he wanted a Solder there were plenty, but what Erskine was looking for was a Knight. Though clad not in armor but clad in the idea of what America should stand for, life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

 Steve was definitely that Knight. His self sacrifice and willingness to do the right thing no matter the cost is made crystal clear in this movie. Even when he was flung into the future and everything he knew and loved was changed and gone forever this first thought was how he failed to keep his promise to Peggy. Though with that said as this was a great character piece for Steve Red Skull was just a standard megalomaniac with a fancy power source. We don't know much about him aside from how he thinks himself on par with the gods, big woop we've seen this type of bad guy 1000 times before. Now again Red Skull and that beam of light thing is an insurance policy and since the end credits scene give a key plot point away I think its time to indulge in a bit of speculation.

 I mentioned this when I reviewed Hulk and Thor, they set up characters and left their fate ambiguous. Basically it was a hedging of bets to see which of these villains would work better with audiences to see who would be the big bad in the first Avengers movie, also just in case any scheduling issues popped up. So they set up The Leader, Loki and Red Skull and left them in unknown straights just to see which of these three would take center stage and we all know that Loki was the one they went with. Mostly due to how well Tom Hiddleston went with audiences, we actually saw him in Thor's end credits scene and also possibly due to the fact that Loki was the villain in the debut Avengers story.

 So now with all of the key players at the table it was time to run it or go home empty. We've had five movies setting up the members of the team, the world they live in and now they needed a big enough threat to bring them all together. So did this bold gamble of a movie franchise work? Well obviously it did but hey that's hindsight for ya. Nonetheless come in next time as the March to Infinity continues with the end of Phase 1, The Avengers!

Animation Review: Samurai Jack: Jack is Back!

 Long ago in a distant land, I Aku the shapeshifting master of darkness unleashed an unspeakable evil. But a foolish Samurai warrior welding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future where my evil is law! Now the fool seeks to return to the past and undo the future that is Aku!

 After all these years he has returned. Samurai Jack returns for a 5th season today on Adult Swim with all but one of the key players returning to either continue the adventures of our favorite time slipped Samurai or at least give him a proper conclusion to his fight to save the world from Aku. Now for those who've never seen Samurai Jack the intro that I summarized is the basic story but I'll elaborate.

 In the beginning there was darkness. But then light came into the universe driving the darkness away. It was nearly exterminated by 3 deities, Odin, Vishnu and Ra. Though the three defeated the darkness a small sliver survived and wandered the cosmos until it crashed into a small underdeveloped Earth. The darkness was slowly encompassing the earth for generations until a Samurai Emperor and his army braved the darkness, eventually the Emperor reached the center of the darkness and fired a special poison tipped arrow into the darkness.

 However instead of destroying the darkness it instead gave the darkness physical form and consciousness, giving birth to the master of masters, the deliverer of darkness, the shogun of sorrow; Aku. Once Aku was born he crucified the Emperor and forced him to watch as Aku gleefully destroyed the Emperor's kingdom. Though beaten but not broken he was guided to the 3 gods who agreed to forge him a weapon that could hurt and eventually destroy Aku. The sword, forged from the Emperor's own light, soul and love of humanity was an anathema to Aku. Armed with this divine sword the Emperor managed to seal Aku into a petrified state. However the Emperor and his wife knew this wasn't the end and so made preparations in case Aku returned.

 Eventually the plan was implemented as with the return of Aku the Emperor had his wife send their young son away to train in various skills and combat techniques around the world until he returned to his homeland years later armed with his father's sword to free his land from Aku. Despite the Samurai's efforts Aku managed to outwit him by sending him into the future to where not only did Aku conquer the earth but also opened channels to various planets and alien races to trade, thus slowly expanding his reach to most of the galaxy with Aku's ultimate goal of conquering the universe. So the Samurai who adopted the name Jack swore to find a way to return to his own time and destroy Aku before he enslaved the earth. So in between trying to discover a way to return; Jack also deals with helping people he comes across, fighting bounty hunters or dealing with Aku's schemes to kill him, and that's the premise. Sure there is some serialization with one or two re occurring characters or following plot points from previous episodes but Samurai Jack's episodes are mostly standalone tales not unlike shows like Cowboy Bebop.

 One of the things that made Jack stand out and stick with people is that there's not all that much dialogue in every episode. In fact I think there may have been one or two episodes that had zero dialogue, which for a kids show is very rare. The reason why is twofold, one Genndy Tartakovsky the creator of Samurai Jack remembers that animation is a visual medium and thus trusts that what the audience sees is enough to convey the story being presented, and when there is dialogue it gets straight to the point and conveys what isn't shown but not in a way where it's holding the audiences hand, mostly character motivation, developmental conversations or just small amounts of levity to the proceedings, nothing more or less and nothing that overstays it's welcome. Leading to my second point, this show does not talk down to its audience! 

 I mean my god do you know how rare that is these days and even back then? A mostly visual action show that conveys its ideas and themes not through dialogue but visually that does not shirk from the overall message even through the "for kids" filter. I mean we see that the monsters Jack fights are robots but we know that they're only robots for sake of censorship and narrative coherency. I mean Aku does have thousands of insect robots under his command so clearly robotics technology has flourished in this setting so if Aku can have robots why not everyone? And if robots are in, cybernetic enhancements aren't out of the question either so all the robots that Jack fights do make sense and even back then I knew why that was.

 But what is good writing without good characters that the writing centers around? First is our main hero Jack, he's a determined focused and honorable warrior that while the new surroundings stun and confuse him he does adapt extremely quickly. No doubt due in part to moving around the world learning from different teachers for most of his life so adapting to new surroundings and social customs is second nature to him. In combat he's strong but thankfully not invincible and also recognizes when strength alone is not enough to win the day. My personal favorite examples are the episodes "Jack and the Three Blind Archers" and "Jack Vs Mad Jack" where Jack managed to get around the 3 archers by relying on their sonar hearing to outmaneuver them and take the three out in a simultaneous attack and where Jack defeated his rage ruled doppelgänger through brief meditation and self actualization respectively. 

 Moving on to the big bad himself who easily makes the top 10 of my favorite villains list, Aku. He's everything I love in a villain, cruel, powerful, intelligent, intimidating, cunning and sadistic but still has a sense of humor about him and has a very simple but memorable and very, very evil design. Like Lord Zedd most of his humor comes from his Genre Savviness and his anger at the failure of his minions, though Aku does tend to succeed more often then naught. So long as he can keep Jack from returning home he succeeds. Also like Robotnik from Sonic SAT AM Aku already rules the world and is working to conquer the universe so Jack frees a species under his subjugation, it's only drinking a cup of water when he has to drain the ocean, in short Aku should be used as an example of how to make a competent, memorable and badass villain. 

 But that was then now to look ahead and speculate. We already know that season 5 takes place 50 years from when we last saw Jack and yet he hasn't aged a day, grew a beard and is seeing visions of his beardless self that talks to him. We also see that Aku's been stepping up his game by more brutal subjugation of those who don't submit to his rule; even taking a page from M Bison/ Vega's book and created an all Female hit squad to kill Jack. And unlike the lord of Shadaloo these ladies didn't need to be brainwashed, so less like the dolls and more Aku's female furies.

 On top of all of this the 5 decades trying and failing to return home is clearly starting to get to Jack as his literal inner monologue tells him. The animation and art style is still consistent with the show back then which is a major plus. (And yes Genndy admitted in an interview that Samurai Jack drew heavy inspiration from Frank Miller's Ronin, hell the Episode "Jack in the Spartans" was clearly inspired by 300, so yeah without Frank Miller we may never have Samurai Jack, you get this ONE Franky boy but only this one.) Back on track, from an uninformed perspective this seems like a good deal, but there is some concern from me and some other fans. First Cartoon Network doesn't have the best track record of reviving shows under their banner, examples include Powerpuff Girls, Teen Titans Go and Season 2 of The Big O. Second, we all know that Aku was played by the lord of all that is and ever shall be, the almighty and eternally glorious Mako. 

Praise be to lord Mako!

 So who are they going to get to replace him? I mean Mako gave Aku an unforgettable and fitting voice, almost as much of a match between actor and character as Hugh Jackman and Wolverine; Mark Hamel and the Joker; Kevin Conroy and Batman; Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow, Clancy Brown and Lex Luthor and even Patrick Stewart and Charles Xavier you just can't imagine another actor in that role without feeling that something was off. Lastly they've been advertising this as a limited series, meaning that this is just a testing phase to see if the show is still viable. So the question is; will the show draw enough viewers to keep around and will the show be worth keeping around after so long? 

 Hopefully we'll see a positive outcome from all of this. And if we don't get a season 6 at least give us a satisfactory and logical conclusion that sees Jack succeed, destroy Aku and set Earth back to its normal history. All we can do is tune in, watch and judge for ourselves so check your TV guides, DVRs or what have you and watch the premiere of Season 5 of Samurai Jack and show Cartoon Network that this deserves to come back. That is unless it sucks in which case hang your heads in shame. But please do well I want Genndy to be remembered for more then just animating one of 3 actually watchable Adam Sandler movies, that's a fate far worse then anything Aku can conceive.

Tokusatsu Review: Kamen Rider Chaser: Part 1: HENSHIN INTO A GOD OF KIELBASA HOKE HOGAN!!!

 In the grand money milking tradition of Toei whenever a character in their recent Kamen Rider series is popular they tend to get their own straight to DVD special, in this case the royalties go to Roidmude 000 aka Kamen Rider Chaser. Though to be fair this did seem to be a good idea since even through the first horrible 20 episodes of Drive Chase was the character that got the most focus, which was part of the problem, a villain was getting more focus and development then the main rider. But I went over my complaints with Drive's first 20 episodes already. But yeah the series did manage to turn itself around and it all started with the show finally wrapping up the stupid Chaser subplot, freeing him from the Roidmudes reprograming and becoming a proper Kamen Rider again, from Proto-Drive to Chaser. Now be forewarned Riku Sanjo has a tendency to write his Kamen Rider movies as fully cannon to the series so there will be spoilers so I suggest that you get fully caught up on Drive before reading this.

 So we open on Roidmude 000, being crucified.... what?

This is gonna be one of those movies isn't it? Hang on.

 First scene in the movie people; you can still turn back it's only gonna get crazier from here. Our opening scene continues with 000 being woken up by Krim who at this point recently transferred his consciousness to the Drive Driver. Um Krim quick question, why 000 crucified, why did he need to be crucified to reactivate? If it's just to look cool why not go for Frankenstein imagery or something just something that would make more sense? Moving on he reactivated 000 to use the Drvie Driver and hunt down the Maverick Roidmudes since he installed what he calls a "Perfect Justice" system into it as opposed to Banno who made the other 108 Roidmudes to be mass produced Satins.

 So he equips Krim, becomes Proto Drive and we see a montage of the events of the day of the Global Freeze with Proto Drive destroying Roidmudes left and right, but we of course see that while the bodies can be taken out with little problem the Viral Core, the true body of the Roidmudes can't be destroyed by Proto Drive. We get an additional scene of Roidmude 051 who was playing with money who Proto Drive takes out with literally One Punch.

What? NO NO NO NO!!!

 Oh god that's a horrible thought; if 000 copied the Ultimate Warrior instead of some random beat cop. Actually that would probably make Drive much more awesome, but alas such a reality must unfortunately be left in the hands of fan fic writers. But before Proto Drive can fully get juiced on Jet Jack and deliver a Gorilla Press drop on everyone of the Roidmudes he was captured by 001, Heart and Brain and was royally foked by the three reprograming him to becoming the Roidmude Grim Reaper, whose function was to destroy rogue Roidmudes so their cores can be rebooted, one of which was 051 who still had its money obsession. This all turned out to be a dream Chase was having or as he puts it his memory circuits were misfiring or something. Kiriko woke him to inform him that there's a new Roidmude attack.

 After our title card we cut to the Roidmude, which is 051 who even after being reset twice and copying a human still has his obsession with money.

And good lord look at this asshole!!! He looks like Moe Howard took fashion tips from Steve Urkle and acts like Larrity from Code Monkeys.

 He's about to kill a witness when Kamen Rider Chaser shows up to take him out yet again. Chaser tells the woman to run (which given 051 activated the Heaviness isn't going to be very far) as he engages his old foe, the two recognize each other and 051 results to dirty play as he fires at the fleeing woman, shooting her through her arm and leg. Chaser is good and pissed but a feather dart is lodged into 051's gun, jamming it and forcing him to retreat. The woman who threw the dart is quickly identified as a Roidmude who declares herself to be an ally to all lost Roidmude. She leaves leaving Chaser to tend to the injured woman, so he summons Mad Doctor to heal her and goes after the Roidmude, no no wait he doesn't he stupidly just takes her to a hospital instead, now I know that Mad Doctor can be used on civilians since it was used when 068 went nuts and his over heating caused people to have heatstrokes so what the hell? But there goes me and my logic again.

 What really happens is that Drive and Mach show up and Chaser tells them to go after 051 while he takes the woman to the hospital. We cut to the hospital where Chase is apologizing to the woman, Hinako Tayama for letting 051 get away with shooting her. She tells him not to worry since if he didn't show up when he did she'd most likely be killed. Hinako's brother Hiroshi shows up and the guy is a complete whinus who only talks to his sister and even then is a low hush whisper, and the guy is completely useless. But Hinako explains that he only opens up to her since she's his only family.

 Chase thinks on Kiriko and Go's relationship and offers to protect him until she recovers. But Hiroshi refuses since Chase scares him, yes he's afraid of the guy who saved his only family from a monster. Well since they're at a hospital maybe they can ask a surgeon if they have a spare set of balls to graft onto Hiroshi since he clearly hasn't had his drop yet; the milksop. Yeah from now on I'm calling him Milksop till further notice; Milksop says that Chase creeps him out because he looks too much like a doll. This causes Chase to blue screen for a bit as he flashes back to his photo shoot for his drivers license and the two receptionist girls telling him to try smiling a bit more since he's too serious and scary looking so he tries again here.

HOLY SHIT THAT IS TERRIFYING!!!

I'm starting to agree with Milksop here Chase, sorry buddy but I think Will Smith put it perfectly.

 From that bit of insanity to a new bit of insanity as we find Medic in a library looking up books to help her relationship with Heart and achieve her Super Evolution through love.

I can help you out with that Medic, I know what it's like to evolve for the one you love more then anything in the world. I can help you discover how powerful love really is.

 NOPE, NOPE, NOPE thanks but no thanks dark lord Homucifer she's crazy enough without your help. Yeah I'll get to her soon enough. Back to this we see Brain hiding in the kiddies corner spying on Medic cause he's gonna make sure that bitch doesn't go and take his man! Later that night Heart is confronting the female Roidmude from earlier and her coup to usurp him as the leader of the Roidmudes. She claims that Hearts' belief that all Roidmudes are capable of Super Evolving is a delusion and that if everyone goes with his ideas then the Roidmudes will go extinct. That's when the female Roidmude; 099 reveals that she's attained Super Evolution and already has several followers.

She then reveals her true form as the Angel Roidmude.

 She and her goons leave telling Heart to surrender leadership peacefully and that she'll be back. The next day Chase goes to Rinna and Krim and asks them about becoming more human. While the two think that Chase is still messed up from Roidmude 108's attack (showing that this does take place after Surprise Future) he's serious since he figures that without emotions he can't help those he cares for. Chase explains that while he did copy a human form he didn't copy his emotions. Krim tells him that he's already fine the way he is and that it could mess with his programing. Now I would be inclined to take his word that Chase doesn't need human emotions; but I won't since he's saying that human emotions are unnecessary when he and Rinna are in awe and excited from looking at a solar eclipse!!!! 

 After dealing with that load of hypocritical dicksauce Chase walks off when Angel shows up again with an offer he can't refuse. Then again she tossed one of her feathers which injected him with LSD or something so he's arguably more inclined to listen more then usual. Then again when you're tripping balls you'd be surprised at what you'd do. So be smart kids, don't do drugs, right Mario?

 Chase will have to learn that the hard way as Angel says that she can help him become human as she leads him to her office. She tells Chase that she copied a Psychiatrist that was dying to gain her human form. She claims the Psychiatrist wanted more than anything to heal the human heart. Thus she wants to do the same for the Roidmudes, thus her Golden Feathers or the "Feather Circuit" as she calls it which will install true emotions into the Roidmudes. Now there is just sooooo much that I can't show so you might want to see this for yourself but all I'll say is this. Chase may want to be a real boy but Angel does one better and helps him to become a real man!!! Now the next bits I can show you. Later we see Moe Urkel going crazy wanting to Super Evolve so he can kill Chase, Heart failing to keep him under control and the little twerp flying off to go on an Archer style rampage.

  But now for the really fun part as this is the scene that shows what Chase is like after Angel grafts the Feather Circuit into his body.
