Video Game Review: E3 2019 thoughts/Madoka Magica Magia Record: She’s still alive!

When you're done read, comment, spread the links, re-tweet and follow me on Twitter @OnDavidsBrain!, support me on Patreon and watch my Twitch Channel Every Saturday at 12:00 ET

Before I say anything this review is in no way, shape or form influenced or sponsored by Aniplex, Magia Quartet or anyone involved with the game or Madoka Magica franchise. This is all me, a fan giving basically free advertisement of my own accord. With that said June of 2019 is turning out to be quite a wonderful and surprising month for gaming. First we have the US release of Persona Q2 New Cinema Labyrinth; the last major release on the 3DS just a few weeks ago. E3 actually gave me something to smile about and not just how pathetic EA and Ubisoft are and the live Adult Swim show that is the Devolver Digital presentation I’m talking about some real good stuff.

Not only do we have a release time for Kingdom Hearts Remind but we also have the remake of Final Fantasy 8 (for the like, three people who actually like it.) But my highlights of E3 is the confirmation of both No More Heroes 3 and Banjo Kazooie for Smash!!!

But in the midst of all this is that a little mobile game that I’ve been eyeing since its release in Japan back around 2017 is getting released in the states on the 25th. Magia Record, a moble game tie in to Madoka Magica. When I heard this was finally making it stateside only one thought ran through my head.

I mean as a Madoka fan how could I not want this? It’s free (technically), introduces a new story, more characters and more chances for Urobutchi and his crew to rip your heart out and squish it like a bug, what more can ya want?! Now there is a story to go with this game so without going into major spoilers the new main is Iroha, a magical girl who’s set up shop in the city of Kamihama and is looking for her little sister Ui who is also a Magical Girl and has been missing for quite some time. Along the way she’ll meet up with some new friends, some familiar to us, others brand new. But aside from the usual witches running around and spreading despair like Johnny Appleseed after listening to Linkin Park for too long there’s these new monsters called Rumors who; just like the rumors in Persona 2 Innocent Sin are the manifestations of rumors spread by the people of the town.

Only unlike the majority of Persona 2 rumors these ones manifest as Witch like creatures who exist to perpetuate the rumors that spawned them. Usually that involves killing people in some convoluted Two Face or Riddler esc obsessive compulsive fashion. As if that wasn’t weird enough, in Kamihama; Magical Girls don’t turn into Witches, instead their witches manifest as Doppels, which are basically dollar store versions of Stands or Personas, only with more body horror, YAY! And just like Innocent Sin; tying all of these weird events together is a cult of Magical Girls called the Wings of Magus with weird powers and objectives. Also there's this weird Kyubey like creature running around which doesn't seem to be part of the collective and no this isn't Juubey from Innocent Malice it actually looks like Kyubey just more intentionally cute.

From what little I can gather on this game the combat isn’t too complicated. You can control up to 5 of your favorite MG’s as you battle it out with Witches, their familiars, Rumors, other MG’s you know the drill. While I’m not too familiar with the exact controls you can input certain commands and cards related to your team to unleash normal attacks, buffs, Final attacks and with some of the girls you can summon their Doppels for a screen nuke that will if not wipe you your enemies then at the very least give you a major advantage. You can recruit other MG’s to chose from but there comes the big catch with this game. It’s a Gatcha free to play game where depending on if you progress in the story, log in daily or buy them yourself you can acquire Gems to spin the wheel and see if you can get a brand new MG for your team.

Now I personally recommend not buying these types of currency unless there’s a special deal going on, like a discount or getting something on top of the Gems your getting like how Kingdom Hearts Unchained does its weekly deals where you not only get jewels for 15 bucks but also access to exclusive deals and Medals for the week, basically make sure you’re getting enough bang for your buck know what I mean? Speaking of KHUX there's the girls themselves and how they level up. See there's a Star tier system. The higher the rank the girls are, the more powerful they are, simple enough. Starting with the 1 Star to the top tier 5 Stars.

Not exactly sure how they level up but it's there. Also if there's a 5 Star MG they will have a Doppel. Sometimes with updates MGs who could only go up to 4 starts will get a boost to 5 and a Doppel of their own. So make sure you save them all cause you never know. But speaking of Gems it's time to get to the brass tacks of why I mad this article in the first place.

To promote the game Aniplex or whomever decided to do a promotion campaign for potential player. If they can reach a pre determined number of per orders for this free mobile game (wtf?) we get escalating bonus'. The top one for 20,000 people pre ordering this sucker is that every player will get the 4 Star Glasses Homura and 150 Gems. Not sure how valuable those gems are but for a 4 Star Moemura I think we need to send some love their way I don't know about all of you. Here's the link to the tweet so you can share with your other friends which includes the link to the Apple Page so you can help us get a leg up in the game and get the poor purple more blob before her world turned her into Loli Schwarzenegger.

https://twitter.com/MagiaRecordEN/status/1134164835057299456

So there you have it, we not only have the original 5 of Madoka, Homura, Sayaka, Kyoko and Mami but we'll also get a plethora of new original MG's and some of the MG's from the Spin off Manga will get their long over due time in the spotlight, including Kazumi and Yuma, yay! Listen, I love the Madoka series because it has earned it from me. This is not my usual thing, either Magical Girl stuff or Gatcha free to play stuff, but there is always the exception that proves the rule as Madoka deserves. With this, a Manga and anime adaptation of this game coming out this year it's a clear sign that this franchise isn't going anywhere. Hopefully with enough support we'll finally get the conclusion we've all been waiting for.

Yes I know it sounds naive but as a certain pinkie pie once said "If someone ever tells me it's a mistake to have hope, well then I'll just tell them they're wrong and I'll keep telling them until they believe; no matter how many times it takes." Besides with that much cheddar rolling in they'd have to be crazy not to bank on that, YA YA!! Well with my community service done for now, time to get back to my sentence of reviewing Heisei Generations Forever.

Video Game Review: Persona Q2 New Cinema Labyrinth: It’s Showtime!!!

When you're done read, comment, spread the links, re-tweet and follow me on Twitter @OnDavidsBrain!, support me on Patreon and watch my Twitch Channel Every Saturday at 12:00 ET

The first Persona Q was a fun little slice of fan service for fans of Persona 3 and 4 seeing our favorite characters interact with each other, deal with bizarre new situations and still deliver a staple Persona gut punch to the heart with a story that manages to blend the themes of the two stories together. Those being the acceptance of Death and facing your darkest truths. So if we add another team of characters, an alternate universe rule 63 version of the Persona 3 lead and tack on the theme of rebelling against an unjust society, do you think that maybe there’s a risk of spoiling the broth? Those are some of my fears going into Persona Q2. Surprisingly not for the Switch but the 3DS again, you’d think that with Nintendo pushing the Switch as their new home/portable console you’d think that Atlus/Sega would take the hint, but no we get it on the 3DS.

And just like with SMT Strange Journey Redux I’m guessing that since Atlus is releasing this on a technically last gen device; they don’t feel the need to give these games an English dub and save some coin. But that just begs the question of why not release them on the Switch anyway with an English dub to keep that sec of the fandom happy? I’m not complaining I just think it’s kind of odd that they’re going about it like this. I'm guessing that it has to do with these mechanics working only on the 3DS. But hey at the end of the day we get more SMT goodness on the go without mobile micro transactions (or the ability to take a selfie with Jack Frost or Mara but hey there’s a price for everything I guess) so it’s all good by my books.

As for the plot from what little I can glean since I’m avoiding spoilers is that the Phantom Thieves (mostly around their school festival due to the presence of Pancake Boy on the team before he stabs them in the back) are taking a page from Veiwtiful Joe and are venturing through the world of movies to undoubtedly solve the problem of some girl that will most likely be Rei 2.0 and be some ghost unable to pass on due to trauma. I mean she basically is Rei only her Zen is an older woman. Anyway these two are stuck in what I’m guessing is the abandoned movie theater near Leblanc, and this is tied into some odd Shadow called Doe that has a doofy looking mask that seems to have some connection to the new girl. As the Phantom Thieves venture through the movie worlds they’ll encounter and recruit the returning Persona characters. First we have the Female Protagonist from Persona 3 PSP in the movie Kamoshidaman where the rapist, child abusing power-mad scumbag is a Superhero.

Then we recruit the Persona 4 team in a Jurassic Park parody where apparently Diego Brando is ruining around since we see that some of the Persona 4 team is turning into Dinosaurs. Last we have the rest of the Persona 3 team in a movie where humanity has been replaced with Robots where one of them has developed individuality and their goal is to protect this A.I. But if the last Persona Q game was anything to go by there’s at least two more movie worlds after those but again I won’t be looking around for it any time soon. As for the combat and Personas if you've played the first Q game you should know what you're in for. We will have the Velvet Room but since there's no Social Links the Personas we get are just that, no extra EXP or anything.

I could talk more about some of the potential features based on the first game but that will just be speculation. From getting new items from salvaging Shadow parts (and yes we're back to traditional Shadow designs instead of the Demons in Mementos, thankfully) to avoiding the F.O.E's that wander the Labyrinths; eventually coming back to beat them and get more items, EXP and potentially strong Personas. Hopefully there's no more of that Streetpass crap, cause I never used the thing and I doubt anyone will since the Switch is a thing now. But all that remains is to get Persona Q2 and see what happens. Now I know I promised that I'd go back to Homura's Revenge after the Month of Mayga man but, something fell into my lap that demands my attention, Heisei Generations Forever, the team up movie of Zi-O and Build, help me.

Tokusatsu Review: Chou Super Hero Taisen Part 2: Ex-Aid and Knuckles.

When you're done read, comment, spread the links, re-tweet and follow me on Twitter @OnDavidsBrain! and support me on Patreon.

Ok presuming I'm Red for my choices I'd go for; Kamen Rider Zolda, Gokai Blue, Ninja Black and Kamen Rider Femme.
So where were we? Oh right this movie decided to recreate the events of Pixels only with actually consistent rules and more idiots. Though honestly aside from some setting and character hiccups this movie really isn't all that bad in my eyes. I mean most of the heroes in this movie aren't the real ones just data recreations so our main characters aren't fighting the real heroes, and aside from the fight between the Ex-Aid Riders and Kyuurangers there actually is a reason for the upcoming battles, to determine the strongest team to save the real world from the Xevious invasion. Though this just begs the question of "why don't every single one of these heroes fight Xevious's ships instead of just a special group of five decided by a pointless tournament? You know like how all of the Sentai Teams worked together to fight the initial Zangyek invasion in Gokaiger?"

It's still better then asinine character destroying reasons like "you're too attached to the dead" or "only Riders or Sentai can exist not both" hell this premise completely opposes that last example. But there's still an hour left to go so it could pull a 180 and go into complete shit. Back to Emu he has to pick the members of his team. Hey you guys remember the Secret Wars Episodes from the 94 Spider-Man cartoon where he has to pick some of Earth's heroes to help him fight the Villains picked by the Beyonder?

Remember the thought and strategy in deciding who to bring and Peter rallying these heroes to save Battleworld from the Beyonder's villains? Yeah this is like that only with no dignity. Oh but before I forget there's a detail I need to cover, this movie was made this year (2017) which also marks the 10th anniversary of Kamen Rider Den-O which for the longest time was one of Toei's most successful and popular series. So you'd think that they brought back Den-O himself Takeru Satoh to reprise his role of Ryotaro Nogami (his breakthrough role BTW) to commemorate this event right?

Instead we have his Imagin partner Data-Momotaros showing up as Den-O. This is exactly like if the Iron Man suit did the fighting without Tony Stark, it can be done but you're missing a critical component to be truly effective. Anyway Data-Momotaros joins on as the team's pink member even though as Emu points out he's Red (so really Momotaros and Emu should have switched their colors. I know this is nitpicking but then again the movie is forgoing color accuracy for the sake of a word pun so that's a sin right there.) With Data-Momotaros on Data-Urataros sends him off and tries to get a real Pink on their team for him to flirt with.

What the shell is wrong with you?! You could have picked any of the Pink Rangers but you not only had to chose the child in the grownups body but also one of the ToQgers; my 2nd most hated Sentai?

As if a sign from the Emperor himself Data-Momotaros just shoos the lolicon shell head off as well as Sleepy Bear Data-Kintaros. Their next pick is Blue so Data-Momotaros just stops the roulette and lands on Kamen Rider Specter, but the world is a cruel bastard and instead they end up with Data-Yakumo (AoNinger). He joins up and for Yellow he picks his mentor MagiYellow. But gets Data-Jin Masato (Beat Buster) instead, but hey they're played by the same guy so close enough. All that's left is green and Data-Jin goes for Data-Kitaoka; Kamen Rider Zolda.

Ok while Zolda is my favorite Rider from Ryuki this brings up a massive plot hole, Zolda and the rest of the Ryuki riders shouldn't exist. If you saw Ryuki you should know that after the events of that series the riders were erased from existence since the creator of the decks they use to become riders was retroactively erased from existence. And no it's never explained how the Ryuki riders were restored past the rider world unification Decade caused so any use of the Ryuki Kamen Riders is 100% bullshit. This makes even less sense once we learn about who created this game but that's something for later.

Back on track Data-Kitaoka is missing his #1 guy Goro, sorry dude but the only way to get Goro is through f-ing Pre-Order DLC for Moral Kombat X, thanks a lot Warner Bros you greedy little turd sniffers! Sorry bout that, now that Emu has his team together it's time for the tournament. They defeat their first opponents the Data-DaiRangers with little to no problem but Emu catches sight of the kid from earlier and goes after him. Back in the real world Hiiro is going over medical records of a kid, the same kid skulking around in Chou Super Hero Taisen as well as the flashback he had earlier named Eito (pronounced 8) when Amu, Jousk3po and Discount Spock enter the CR office. Amu asked the two Kyuurangers to look up Hiiro's medical records and learned that Eito was assigned as Hiiro's patient right after he came back from America.

Hiiro has another flashback to when he met Eito who didn't care that he was infected with a virus that was digitizing his body; only fixated on completing Chou Super Hero Taisen. No seriously whether Eito died or not had absolutely no concern with him whatsoever to the point where he doesn't even bother with any operation to fix his illness due to him not caring. Now this wasn't out of depression or anything like that Eito literally did not care. Hiiro said that he would only perform operations for those who wanted them and Eito's only response was a "eh whatever" so Hiiro was like "fine whatever" and I guess fucked off for lunch or something. You know I think we might need a second opinion here; Doc, yeah could you tell Hiiro exactly what your thoughts of this situation are?

Yep, Hiiro, in that one moment you just lost your medical license and would be slumming it out with Taiga right now because YOU DO NOT ASK A MINOR FOR CONSENT TO PERFORM A LIFESAVING PROCEDURE OR NOT!!!! Why in the wide, wide, world of Sports did you ask the underaged totally not living on his own child instead of oh I don't know HIS LEGAL GUARDIAN WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS CARE AND WELFARE?! As we clearly see Eito is not in the proper state of mind both developmentally, mentally due to his fixation on his programing or legally to be making these kinds of decisions on his own. This kid clearly has mental issues impairing his judgment so you just take his word that he doesn't want to be cured and walk off?! This kid honestly would have been better off in the care of that psychotic Nazi fuck Keriger!

I'm honestly not joking Keriger is more qualified to have a medical license then you after that decision you stupid, pretentious fuckwit! You rag on Emu for being a novice because he cares too much for his patients when even the most incompetent of interns, hell the Janitor from Scrubs can tell you that you don't ask a minor for legal consent on this matter!!! Oh and look after you listened to the moronic brat instead of his legal guardians and didn't perform the surgery on him Eito gets sucked into the Internet after he finished Chou Super Hero Taisen and distributed it online! Now I know next to nothing on Japanese Medical Care much less power of attorney for minors in Japan but I'm pretty damn skippy that this would never fucking fly in a institution that has even the slightest modicum of common sense.

This right here is the scene that breaks the movie for me because this actually gets worse. Skipping ahead a bit we learn that Eito is the one responsible for all of this, as if his stylized 8 logos all over the game world weren't enough of a giveaway on top of the fact that he was the one who created Chou Super Hero Taisen in the first place; he is the mastermind behind the Xevious invasion and something else that will be revealed later. But the point is this whole situation is entirely Hiiro's fault due to his horribly incompetent and dangerous decision to listen to the moron kid instead of any legally certified guardian and just did not perform the surgery. You know the worst part is that this horrible decision making is somewhat consistent with Hiiro from the main series. Considering his treatment of Saki leading to the perfection of Graphite as well as teaming up with Kamen Rider Cronus to get her back.

Even though he knew damn full well that Cronus was a psychopath who would never save her and keep using the threat of deleting her data as a means to keep him on a leash which would result in the enslavement of the world by perpetuating Kamen Rider Chronicle when all he had to do was help Emu beat him the first chance they had! Which would lead to putting his crazy ass in Jail, reclaiming all the Proto Gashats and thus save Saki and all the other victims. Honestly Hiiro has always been a problem character for me thoughout this series from his first appearance to the end. His ego and uncaring attitude toward his patients honestly rubbed me the exact wrong way to the point where I was wishing that his hands would be crushed like Stephen Strange if anything to get him off his high horse, get a clue and have a whole humble pie shoved down his gullet! To me a doctor that is that careless, incompetent, uncaring and arrogant should not be placed anywhere near a scalpel much less an ICU, I mean for the love of god Justine are you a real doctor or a doctor like how Dr Pepper's a doctor?

Enough of my ranting back to the idiot plot; on top of the disease Little Jobe also apparently suffered from what I can guess is Alexthymia (spoilers it's not he was just a disinterested little shit) but if that's the case why would he want to make a video game about the Riders and Sentai? While Discount Spock notices that sounds just like him; in the game world Poppy and Emu catch up to Little Jobe who explains that he refused Hiiro's operation like a dumbass. Which is again ignoring the decision of his legal guardians and not the moronic brat who claims to not have emotions that lead him to being sucked into the internet somehow. Emu thinks that Poppy can get him out but apparently she can't if he's already become a game character (yet that didn't stop you from retrieving Kuroto from the Proto Mighty Action X Origin Gashat a few episodes later so yeah this movie's full of shit what else is new) even then Little Jobe is perfectly content with staying in the game world. Data-Momotaros however tells Emu that the next match is coming up and so he leaves to join up with the team.

The movie actually decides to be merciful and just skips ahead to the final match between Team Emu and Team Genm which consists of Data-Gemn Level X, Kamen Riders Ryugun and Specter, MomoRanger and much to my dismay Yellow Owl. The match is 5 V 5 with Zolda taking the first point by defeating Ryugun. Beet Buster defeats Yellow Owl and as for MomoRanger Vs Den-O all I can say is Happy 10th Anniversary Den-O!!!!
Weakness IDENTIFIED!!!!
Way to treat one of your biggest cash cows and most popular Kamen Rider series Toei! Yakumo also loses to Specter so Ex-Aid has to take down Genm to break the tie which he of course does otherwise the movie would end already. So Team Ex-Aid has won the tournament and can now claim the power to stop the Xevious invasion force, the combined powers of the Kamen Riders and Super Sentai, Kamen Sentai Gorider!

Ok to be perfectly honest it's not that bad it's just five Kamen Rider Ichigo suits with the GoRanger color-scheme and a cape big freaking woop. Though a personal cool part is that they each get their own battle vehicle (no combination thankfully since that would have most likely been an off balance asymmetrical mess) AkaRider gets the Variblune, AoRider gets Castle Doran, MidoriRider gets the Gokai Galleon, KiRider gets MagiDragon (we get the joke), and of course MomoRider gets the Den-Liner. They manage to destroy the Xevious forces with little fanfare and destroy the main ship by completing the Independence Day homage and hit the giant glowing red fuck me spot underneath the ship, granted without Randy Quaid pulling a Kamikaze attack.

With Xevious all clear the Kamen Sentai powers down and the five GoRider Clow cards fly off leaving only Ex-Aid behind. Just in time for the bonus stage or as I redundantly like to call it, the Season Pass from hell.
"Corporate Commander here to tell you about the AAA hit from Namco Bandai, Chou Shocker Taisen only for PS4 because Fuck PC gaming! It comes with everything you all love, Microtransactions, a 100 Dollar Day one collectors edition and of course a 60 Dollar season pass! This little beauty will be localized by the wonderfully talented people of Bandai of America and published by Gearbox Software; which will be handled by my personal favorite sock puppet Randy. So pick it up the same day as this years Call of Duty you stupid fucking Whales, and remember YOU NEED IT!!!"
Ok to be fair this isn't the real Shocker; again it's just the Data versions of them because let's face it if Little Jobe was going to make a villain faction for the Rider and Sentai to fight; Shocker is sadly the first and most famous villain group in this franchise so that does make sense. Besides if the real Shocker were involved we'd know about it already because Shirakura has made them as subtle as a wrecking ball slamming down on your foot. Anyway Data-Shocker as I'll be calling them begin their rampage with the Black Cross King leading the charge with additional Sentai Big Bads and foot solders.
Who the hell is that asshole?
This is actually the "Great Leader" of Data-Shocker, Shocker Great Leader 3 as he calls himself and he, of course wants to avenge the destruction of the real Shocker by taking over the real world and this is soooo not getting the M.Bison clip. This asshole even had the balls to steal Fruit Jesus' catchphrase, I now despise this tool with all of my hate! So Fred Fuchs orders his army to start the attack after Emu gets whisked off into the corn fields. Amu and Hiiro arrive but both leave just as quickly after Taiga tells Hiiro that unless the connection between the two worlds is broken the real world will be destroyed. Parado arrives as well and thankfully he's in a good mood because he joins the game and fights Data-Shocker with Taiga. The two transform and take on the forces while Hiiro goes into the Game world again to talk with Data-Hiiro.

Speaking of; Emu is confronted by Data-Hiiro and Little Jobe who finally reveal they're the ones behind all of this. It's the same plan as Kamen Rider Taisen, Data-Hiiro is destroying the real world leaving the game world for Little Jobe as penance for the real Hiiro failing to save him. The two walk off while Poppy gets a transmission from Discount Spock saying that he wants to talk with Little Jobe. So she pulls him in while Hiiro goes back to his apartment and pulls out Little Jobe's laptop that he somehow has. You'd think that thing would be kept at the hospital to analyze how he got sucked into the Game World but that would mean that you're a logical and sensible person, thus not Toei's target audience for this brain dump of a movie! So somehow Hiiro uses Little Jobe's computer to get himself sucked into the Game World too, how?

"With Scieneeeeeeence!!!!!!!"
That's it my stupidity meter has hit its limit for now so come on by next time as we wrap up this stupid movie with Hiiro trying to clean up his own damn mess and the final fight against Fred Fuchs!

Manga Review: Madoka Magica The different story Volume 1: Burnt Cherry Pies and bitter tea.

Please be sure to read, comment, spread the links, re-tweet and follow me on Twitter @OnDavidsBrain! and support me on Patreon.

So from here on out I'm just going to assume you've seen the show so be forewarned there will be spoilers.

Our table of contents cover is of Kyoto sitting on what I assume is a chandelier in the remains of her church. Ok several questions here, first off if she's sitting on it why hasn't it fallen off the ceiling already? Putting her diet aside the place was burned down and last I checked heavy chandeliers don't stay long when bolted to burnt wood. Also how did she even get up there in the first place, is she a spider monkey or something?

Oh wait never mind.
We open on Mami and two other magical girls fighting a witch that looks like it escaped from the world of Tron.
IGNORANT USERS ALL WILL OBEY THE MCW!!!
The three try to attack it but it doesn't seem to make a dent. The two start to retreat telling Mami to run if it gets too rough. Mami doesn't of course since she's a main character and a user is duty bound to keep fighting so she does eventually De-Rez the bug.

Mami offers the two girls to share the Grief Seed, the two refuse and instead give her some advice.

So Mami sees that being a magical girl isn't all sunshine, friendship and unique dresses. We then jump one year later where after Mr Mind tried to devour the space time continuum. Wait wait wrong universe, this is far more sane then a giant super intelligent caterpillar trying to eat time. Anyway we see that Mami has essentially thrown herself into her role as a Magical Girl, she's about to take on a Witch in her labyrinth when she notices that the entrance is warped.

Inside we see a rookie Kyoko fighting against a Minotaur Witch and not doing too well. She then tries her special duplication technique in a two pronged attack which works and Kyoko takes down the Witch. Or does she? Familiars show up and restrain Kyoko, while one of them goes to grab the witch's axe allowing the witch to regenerate its body. As the Witch is about to kill Kyoko Mami ties the monster up with her ribbons and destroy the familiars saving her.

Mami figures that the Witch's real body is its axe explaining its supposed regeneration. So the two destroy the Witch and introduce themselves afterwords. Kyoko apologizes for stepping into Mami's turf. Mami doesn't mind however since the witch is dead and thus, no more deaths by that Witch's hands, Kyoko takes her leave but Mami offers to let her share the Grief Seed. She accepts her offer and after Kyubey disposes of it Mami asks if she has some free time.

Back at Mami's place Kyoko is enjoying Mami's peach pie and complements her for her experience of fighting witches and how grateful she is having met her. We end the first chapter with Kyoko asking Mami if she can take her on as a disciple.

Chapter 2 starts a few weeks later with Mami over the moon that she's finally made friends with a magical girl. After school the two go off on their hunts, exterminating witches and it seems to go well for a while. One day Mami explains to Kyoko about how she became a magical girl.

Afterwords Kyoko invites Mami to her place where she has dinner with Kyoko's family. Kyoko's dad explains that when he and his family were in the financial pits for a while due to him introducing new ideas to his sermons to the point where he was excommunicated from the church, that is until recently when seemingly out of nowhere people showed up in droves to hear his sermons. Of course it doesn't take a genius to put two and two together so after dinner Mami confronted Kyoko and she came clean saying that her wish was for people to hear her dads sermons, Mami offers her concerns about making wishes on behalf of others however Kyoko argues that it was for her happiness as well as her family; that her dad was always working to make sure her and her family was happy so by helping him she's helping herself.

After some time passes and the two continue to work together Kyoko thinks that the two are so good that even Whalpugusnaught would be a simple job for them and the two make a promise that if it does appear the two could team up and protect the town together. But as they say all good things must come to an end and their cries of jubilation will become tears. Later that night Kyoko is alerted to a witch in her fathers church, sure enough people under the influence of the witch's kiss were planing to burn the place down. Kyoko managed to subdue them before taking down the witch, afterwords however Kyokos father sees what happened.

From here in episode 3 is where we start the downward spiral, at some later point in time Mami's asking why Kyoko's so out of it lately. Kyoko then asks Mami a hypothetical question, that if a magical girl saves someone from committing suicide while under a witches influence and a neighbor or loved one saw the victim try to kill them self; would it have been better to not save the person if the neighbor or loved one would label the victim as a lunatic instead of dying; being mourned like normal and being spared the scrutiny. Mami says that while she does agree that what magical girls do might not be the best thing for every person in every circumstance she says that they can't just ignore a person who's about to die biased on whether the person would be better off without being labeled as crazy afterwords.

Later that night Kyoko walks in on her dad in about his fifth bottle of scotch with a group of his followers out the window. She tries to tell him of the good she did in saving people. But all he does is call her a witch and a demon for manipulating people to join his flock, that they didn't come of their own accord but that they were brought there under the influence of a demon who made a deal with his daughter all as part of a plan to kill them as part her pact with the demon.

Here's where I step in to bring the hammer on this jackass, so by your own admission you would much rather put your half cocked nonsense over the safety, health and financial stability of your family? So by proxy when your daughter who you claim to be doing all of this for and were grateful for the new members of your flock brought them to you by admittedly less then ethical means you call her a monster, go into a drunken slump and blame her for putting her life on the line in exchange for insuring that her little sister wouldn't have to go to sleep hungry?

Yeah no that's not how it works here dude in the real world money makes the world go round, you can proclaim your ideas in your free time on a blog or v-log or something. But when you are doing the job that puts money in your wallet and food in your family's stomach you do what the script says and make sure they keep coming dickhead. Now again if you want to suggest your own ideas do it off the clock, but when it comes to making money, make the fucking paper and stick to the script! The only reason Kyoko did what she did was because you put your nonsense over your family's welfare, so thus you lose asshole!

So after that Kyoko stops seeing Mami who continues to fight witches solo wondering where Kyoko went and if she isn't like the other magical girls. She flashes back to asking other Magical Girls why they only go after witches and not the stray familiars. They say that if they did what Mami suggests that the witch population would decrease and thus less Grief Seeds to collect. When she asks Kyubey he says that more often then naught magical girls would let familiars go about killing and eating humans if it means that they would grow into proper witches and thus more Grief Seeds, and that Mami's type of magical girl is much less common.

Winter rolls around and as Mami is searching the town for witches she hears a news announcement, that the Sakura house has been burnt to the ground and the firefighters found three corpses, believed to be a murder suicide. We then cut to Kyoko standing outside the burnt remains of the church. Kyubey asks if she's going to get any more Grief Seeds since she hasn't purified her Soul Gem in a while. Kyoko asks what the point is if her power couldn't protect her family. She says that she doesn't need it and thinks that her dad was right and there really might not be any difference between her and a witch.

Nonetheless she tries to fight a witch but can't use her illusion magic. She nearly gets killed by the witch but after having some painful flashbacks she manages to over power it. She asks Kyubey why she can't use her magic and it explains that every magical girls powers comes from their wish, and since Kyoko rejected her wish she subconsciously rejected her own powers (stupid power limiting brain). Chapter 3 ends with Mami finding Kyoko in the snow, the two hugging and crying, Mami for not finding Kyoko sooner and Kyoko blaming herself that her family died.

Chapter 4 starts with Kyoko back at Mami's place where she offers Kyoko to stay with her until things settle down. Kyoko refuses saying she can't impose on her like that. Um kid, your family just died right in from of you and your house is gone, I think she'd understand. Mami however tells her she can stay as long as she needs and that she doesn't have to do everything by herself. She then goes to make a light dinner for the two. Just make sure you don't give her that burnt cherry pie, I doubt she'd be wanting that right now. Kyoko thinks to herself that she can't be with Mami anymore.

Later after they finish off a familiar Mami tends to Kyoko's damage.

Mami then proves she's not that shrink when she asks an incredibly stupid question asking why Kyoko doesn't use her fascination magic and stating that if she doesn't give her all she's going to get killed. On that note Kyoko drops the bombshell that instead of going after both Witches and Familiars, that they should just concentrate on the witches and ignore the familiars. She further goes on to say that Mami's hero act isn't cutting it for her anymore and that his is a matter of survival and can't go with her hobbies anymore. Mami says that if they don't then people are going to die, that's when Kyoko snaps and shouts that those who want to die will die regardless of the witches or familiars, so why should she go out of her way to save ungrateful assholes who wanted to end it all anyway?

Mami tries to console her saying that she understands how she feels about her family and this is where Kyoko goes full renegade and screams that she has no idea what she's talking about; that a girl whose family died in an accident is nothing like a girl who's family was killed because of her. She does however admit that Mami was right about one thing, that she should have made the wish for herself, so that only she would be the one suffering instead of forcing her perception of happiness on others. Not to mention the fact that her wish essentially brainwashed people to listen to her dads ramblings but that's another discussion. Back on track Kyoko says that from now on she'll only ever use her magic for her benefit.

She tries to walk off saying they're finished but Mami won't have it telling Kyoko that she can't let her walk that path. Kyoko however isn't playing around, so she transforms and points her spear at Mami telling her that she's willing to kill her. Mami transforms as well and the two fight, however during the fight Kyoko says that Mami is clearly holding back as she manages to get her spear inches away from Mami's throat. Kyoko says that she'll definitely kill her next time. As she walks away Mami tells Kyoko that she was the first Magical Girl she ever saw eye to eye with. When Kyoko's completely gone Mami starts crying now that she's back to being alone again. Kyoko says to herself that Mami can find people far better then her.

We then cut to a few months later where Mami is waking up from a dream when Madoka is trying to get Mami's attention telling her that Sayaka is in trouble. So the first volume ends with Sayaka being attacked by Kyoko and Mami intervening to save her pointing her musket at Kyoko's back Kyoko commenting that she thought Mami rotted away a long time ago.

Afterwords we get some words from the writer about how grateful he is for the gig and being able to adapt this story from the "farewell story" audio drama that came with the DVD. This first volume is pretty good, though that's mostly due to this volume being an adaptation of the aforementioned audio drama, which was written by Gen Urobuchi himself, which means that its cannon, at least as far as I know. So keep in mind that after Mami woke up we're off the reservation, the rest is an alternate timeline. I'll get to commenting about the artwork when we end the coverage of this story, so till next time.
