Month of Mayga Man: Favorite Mavericks of each Mega Man X game

When you're done read, comment, spread the links, re-tweet and follow me on Twitter @OnDavidsBrain!, support me on Patreon and watch my Twitch Channel Every Saturday at 10:00 ET

Hey guys, I know I'm very late I mean given what's been going on I think that you can cut me some slack while I focused on other priorities. But anyway during these UNCERTAIN TIMES we have to keep ourselves and each other occupied and hopeful. So what better way than to give people hope for the future by looking at a civil war between robots for the safety of humanity? I know I was going somewhere with this but screw it it's the Month of Mayga Man once again and now I can finally talk about my favorite entry in the Mega Mans series; Mega Man X.

Last year I started off by talking about my favorite robot Masters from the classic series so why not do the same for the X series? Now admittedly the Mavericks aren't exactly as memorable as their Robot Master predecessors so there may be some times where aesthetics triumphs over all or only because their weapon is awesome but at least it will be much shorter since there's 8 mainline X games as opposed to the 11 of the classic series. Now rest assured there are some bad Maverick bosses in these games, but that's for next time for now let's get to the good ones.

From the Original Mega Man X we have Storm Eagle.
Originally a Maverick hunter alongside X and Zero; Storm Eagle fell in with Sigma after he was bested in battle by the former Maverick Hunter leader. In battle he relies on both his aerial skills and the arena to eliminate anyone who dares to stop him and his new master. He provides a decent challenge for those who pick him as their first stage and his weapon the Storm Tornado is one of the best weapons in the franchise for the amount of coverage and damage it can dish out to common enemies. Him being a formerly noble Maverick Hunter also gives a decent amount of weight to the encounter between him and X in Maverick Hunter X where you can hear the regret in Eagles voice as he declares his intention to fight for Sigma. Also the humanoid bird design is simple but effective, a nice base to judge other Mavericks by in my opinion.

X2 we have yet another bird Maverick, Overdrive Ostrich
Just like Storm Eagle Ostrich was formerly a Maverick Hunter who joined Sigma after recognizing his new speed after he was forced into retirement when he lost his ability to fly after an accident on a mission. (But then again good thing he was based on an Ostrich which ca't even fly in the first place so I honestly don't know how he could fly in the first place, rockets maybe?) Anyway his weapon is one of the three that works on the X-Hunters, making him a top priority if you want to save Zero. Thankfully his strategy is easy to figure out and provides a decent challenge if you do decide to go after him first. Though outside of the X-Hunter weakness his Sonic Slicer is just ok.

Blizzard Buffalo was picked for X3, though mostly because he was the only one you can beat to star the weakness chain.
Now a major problem with X3 is that there's no happy middle ground with the bosses, either you stream-roll them with their weaknesses or they crush you with their high defenses, nearly unavoidable attack patterns and hard hitting attacks. The only reason Blizzard Buffalo is on this list is because he has an exploit that you can use to take him down and start the weakness chain. Though to be fair his weapon does cause enemies to drop heath when they're destroyed with it so there's that.

X4 I picked the only Maverick that actually affected the story, Magma Dragoon
Now unlike Storm Eagle who only go expanded on in the remake; Maverick Hunter X Magma Dragoon's actions actually do have an impact on the story as he was the one who caused the Sky Lagoon to crash thus sparking the conflict between the Maverick Hunters and Repliforce. Though his reasoning was rather weak as he only helped Sigma so he could have a chance to fight X and Zero. Now at least outside of Japan this is weak but apparently this is elaborated in expanded material that never left Japan. But aside from that we do have a chance to fight him using a Ride Armor making him at least a decent choice for the first pick of the weakness chain. Also he's basically a walking Street Fighter reference and hey if Capcom decided to reuse him as the practice mode boss in X5 I'm guessing someone else liked him too.

For X5 I picked one of two survivors of Repliforce, Spiral Pegasus
As X4 was the first to try to expand on the Maverick's back stories aside from "humans suck all hail Sigma" Pegasus here is a sign of continuity between the games as he and Burn Dinorex are the last surviving members of Repliforce. Now X and Zero don't want to kick him when he's down but since Pegasus has a component for the Rocket that is humanity's last hope and that he's infected with the Sigma Virus he unfortunately has to be taken down. Plus Pegasus has the chance to avenge either General, Colonel or Iris (depending on who fights him) while trying to uphold the honor of his fallen organization. Also just like Storm Eagle his outdoor battle arena offers him a major advantage, on top of the fact that his weakness doesn't annihilate him in one click of a button making for an actual challenge that I can appreciate. Sadly his weapon is just ok with X and rather tricky to pull off for Zero but nevertheless I have to give the thumbs up for fly boy here.

X6 is Blizzard Wolfang, the best of the worst Mavericks from the Worst game in what I consider the worst game in the X series.
I'll save my complaints about X6 for later but hey at least Wolfang looks cool (pardon the pun) and at least this game really tries to give the Mavericks some decent backstories for why they're helping the bad guys. Mostly due to a debt that they owe the main villain of X6, Gate. In Wolfang's case he was blamed for a cave in that North Pole research team and left to freeze to death by Alia. Shame that only gets mentioned at the end of the level but I can at least acknowledge the effort, but that's all.

X7 is where I bring up yet another avian Maverick, Wind Crowrang.
X7's Mavericks all have their own unique quirks, most of which can be fixed by switching to the Japanese audio track on the Legacy collection. But just like X6 there's not much to these guys other than Axl's former teammates. Out of all of these guys I'd say that Crowrang is at least the most interesting from a visual perspective. Maybe it's just because the Avian Mavericks still have the pseudo humanoid design along with their wings but I just think that they look cool. I'll unfortunately have more to say on Red Alert when I get to the worst Mavericks list but at least Crowrang just barely manages to slink on by on his design.

Lastly we have X8 and the last bird, Burn Rooster.
X8 is a step back in the right direction for the most part in terms of Maverick designs. Of these New Generation Reploids I have a bit of a soft spot for Burn Rooster. While the rooster design sounds goofy the emphasis of his legs in his design blends in well with his flaming kick attacks, those talons helping out with that. On top of that if players aren't careful and minding the arena Rooster can roast them with his desperation fire tower and Melt Creeper combo. With that I'm officially back in action, next time I get into the guts with what I consider to be the worst Mavericks.

Megaman X is owned by Capcom.

Once again April fools is upon us and now to avoid the usual fake posts by putting up this years crop of memes. Which you would have already seen if you're a regular viewer of Toku Riffs live with the RVT crew. In case you're not aware Toku riffs is Ez Rider, Shades, Spade Ace and Matty J and a whole group of fans getting together to riff MST3K style on the latest episodes of Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Ultraman that we can get our hands on. We also riff on classic series as well. We also riff tokusatsu movies when they're available for fansubs so we have a lot of fun, laughs and just a general good time.

During the intermissions we submit Tokusatsu memes to try to make the four headed jury laugh and show our creativity. So if you see this post follow the link to the RVT twitch page. Toku riffs is on Sunday at 7:00 PM or 6:00 PM depending if there's a marathon going on. Here's the link to the RVT twitch page and then the memes, use as you see fit.

Personal Post: Kamen Rider Zi-O Ep 30, Power Rangers Beast Morphers Ep 5, Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger episode 4 & Mega Man X8 Part 2 (PS4)

You know, I do this to myself. I keep trying to give Zi-o the time of day, only to be disappointed by how much they don't care. Yet I persist in watching it, why? At least Beast Morphers and Ryusoulger are shaping up to be decent, despite some small flaws. Also on my streaming side I've completed Mega Man X8 and by proxy the two Mega Man X Legacy Collections. Regarding my thoughts on the games, well give me some time to stew and I'll come back with my list of the best and worst of the Mega Man X series (not counting Xtreme 1, 2 and Command Mission) so look forward to that.

Personal Post: Kamen Rider Zi-O Ep 29, Power Rangers Beast Morphers Ep 4, Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger episode 3 & Mega Man X8 Part 1 (PS4)

Another week and man what a fresh load of disappointment. I think I may have finally reached my breaking point with Zi-O where it's clear that the writers have just given up. Beast Morphers seems to be planting seeds of the story arc which is a definite good thing whereas Ryusoulger has the Green and Black revealed after their early bird cameo from Super Sentai Saikyo battle and they're sociopaths and the episode gets darker from there. As for Mega Man X8, I was a complete idiot and picked hard mode for this play through. I honestly haven't had this much trouble in an X game since Mega Man X2 or 3, jeez.

Personal Post: Kamen Rider Zi-O Ep 28, Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger episode 2 & Mega Man X7 Part 2 (PS4)

First off, now Beast Morphers this week due to it not airing for whatever reason. But we still have Zi-o and Ryusoulger to look forward to, yay. As usual Zi-O just makes Geiz look like a super powered Tsundere with Another Zi-O's status in question and Ryusoulger is starting to shape up into something good, but will it be enough to save Sentai, that remains to be seen. As for X7, I can clearly see why people despise this game since the castle stages, boss fights and Sigma are complete and utter jokes but I still hate X6 more at the end of the day. Because even though X7 is as dull as dishwater at least it didn't piss me off like X6.

Ryusoulger is here so now the weekly V-logs are going to be longer as a result so bear with me. But first, we have Zi-o where Schwartz is the one responsible for all of this, because the Timejackers are idiots. Beast Morphers has a stand alone episode that, while stupid isn't Neo Saban stupid. But the best is a new Sentai premier episode to cover. However there's mostly just establishment scenes, little world building, exposition and an annoying comic relief character.

As for the stream of the week we have what many consider to be the worst Mega Man X game, X7. However I have a personal soft spot for this game since this was my first X game. Besides at least this  wasn't poorly constructed like X6 clearly was. Though yes, X7 is a poorly made game but at least it's poor design came from a botch 2d to 3d conversion as opposed to sheer incompetence. Besides I can just switch to the Japanese audio in the Legacy collection so I can at least fix that famous issue.

We've officially hit the halfway point of Zi-o and so far our "heroes" are starting to make Captain Hero look competent. One's going to become Mega-Hitler, one is a mass murderer and Geiz is Shinji Kido 2.0 because he refuses to actually kill Sougo and end this madness. At this point I'm rooting for the Timejackers because at least they're following through with their plans. On to more pleasant news Power Rangers Beast Morphers is still looking good, will it be enough to save the franchise remains to be seen. Even better is that I'm now finally finished with Mega Man X6 and will never have to play that game without Rookie Hunter mode again.

Time for a double dose of disappointment this week. Not only does Kamen Rider Zi-O keep breaking its own rules to ratchet up "Drama" but I also get started on Mega Man X6. As you know from my list of the worst sequels in gaming I consider X6 to not only be the worst game in the X series but I can put it right up there with Mega Man and Bass as the worst game in the X franchise. Sure the platforming and Nightmare effect might cheese me off now, but trust me when we get to the Gate stages, that's when the steam will start shooting out of my ears. But to pick me up, I cover the first episode of Power Rangers Beast Morphers, so far, I like what I'm seeing, it's good to get actual effort on a Power Rangers season again.

Alright I'll be holding off on talking about Sentai in my Vlogs for a while since it's a mini series that is basically just some quick fun and set up for Ryusoulger. So I'll just focus on Zi-O for a while, or maybe I'll also talk about Power Rangers Beast Morphers on top of Zi-O and Ryusoulger, we'll see. But one thing that I am sure of is that I'm finally back in the Mega Man X saddle. As I take a look at what was supposed to be the end of the Mega Man X series there's only one thing that plagues my mind. The horrible prospect of having to play what I consider to be the worst game in not just the X series but the entire Mega Man franchise (but then again I haven't played all of them yet, especially Mega Man and Bass) yep, Mega Man X6, help me.

I'm finally done with the Mega Man X Legacy Collection Volume 1. Now I can play these games on my own time without trophy worries and whatnot. Though I still have to deal with Zi-O and Lupinranger Vs Patranger. At least Lup Vs Pat is still good were as Zi-O is, well Zi-O. Now the reason why I'm still covering Zi-o is two fold, one I think this is good practice for my critiquing skills and two, now that I know what the worst of the series is like I will have what I've sorely lacked as a Toku fan, a frame of reference.

How is it that Zi-o keeps introducing more things that get under my skin? Oh yeah, because this show is helmed by complete morons. Though I feel that the Toku V-logs may just keep getting shorter and shorter as I keep running into the same problems over and over again every week.  But you know what makes my week a little bit better? Playing Megaman X4 without the memeable slapdash English Voice acting and a somewhat decent fan translated script next to me that's what!

Now before you say anything, we all know that X4's English dub was on par with how bad a Central Park Media dub can get, it was just how it was back then sadly. But, come on we have to have some standards here. Also thankfully there was someone out there who translated the original Japanese script for us. Otherwise we would have had to hear "what am I fighting fooooooorrrr!?" for the 100th time. But yeah to keep things fair I not only beat Zero's campaign on Japanese but I wrapped up X's English Playthough with his ill fitting English voice intact. But yeah X4 is still awesome no matter how you play it.

Starting off with the V-log for the week, it might just be my shortest one so far. But then again when the show gives me nothing much to talk about I'm kind of stuck at an impasse. However Megaman X3 gives me more than enough to talk about. But nothing all that good, I gave up, threw in the white flag, admitted defeat. I mean I know I already beat the game and got the Medal and Trophy but for some inexplicable reason I couldn't beat it this time.

Even though I beat Kaiser Sigma at least 7 times I couldn't get past that horrible fire wall chase sequence. I mean why would I possibly expect to have beaten the game when I beat the last boss? How stupid and entitiled of me to assume that the game is done when the game is beat, no no no, better to jump through one last series of hoops and if you're slightly off then it's back to beating the last boss all over again with waiting for your health to refill wasting yours and everyone else's time! I already beat the game and got the trophy so as far as I'm concerned I beat X3 and now I never have to deal with it and it's incredibly flawed design again. Though there's still X6 to deal with, which is still worse than X3.

Like I said last time there's no Toku V-log this week since they took a New Years Break. So instead you get to see me flail about Mega Man X2, now usually I'd stick to the Maverick boss order at first and then go after the X-hunters after I beat Wheel Gator. But I'm an idiot and chose to get the X-hunter's weaknesses and the Legacy Collection Trophies on top of that! Free tip, don't, just stick to the script. In other news I finally got that Covert Ops trophy afterword, even though I know I would have had it had I not lost to the Mini-boss. But aside from that that's another Mega Man X game under my belt, also I'm trying out a new setting on my stream basically getting rid of the comments that I know I don't have and I think this is the way I'll stream until I actually get some viewers.

So, how was your holidays? Good? Great here's me talking about a dumb episode of Kamen Rider Zi-o and LupinRanger Vs Patranger. Though a bit of a heads up, Kamen Rider and Sentai are taking a break until the 6th so no new V-logs for a while. Though you can keep yourself occupied instead with  my Streams of the Mega Man X series. Starting off with the first one and while the music and game play are as tight as a Swiss Bank vault its difficulty is nothing to sneeze at. Not classic Mega Man levels of hard but Sigma and some of the Mavericks will still give you trouble, also screw the Hadoken!

Video Game Review: Top 10 Worst Video Game Sequels I've seen so far: Part 1

When you're done read, comment, spread the links, re-tweet and follow me on Twitter @OnDavidsBrain! and support me on Patreon.

For those who want to see what I think are the best video game sequels here you go

Now while this list mostly consists of sequels I haven't played I've heard more then enough horror stories surrounding them to draw a decent conclusion. You may be asking why you would be talking about bad Sequels that you haven't played acting like you know what you're talking about. One reason, I value my time and my money and like to avoid spending either on entertainment that isn't worth it. Besides sometimes you can just tell a sequel is going to shit the bed just by looking at it. So let's go down the list of lost time and investment shall we?

#10 Final Fantasy XIII (All of them)

Yes I'm cheating with these but the internet mostly agrees that Final Fantasy's time during the 7th console generation was nothing short of a monumental disaster. From the boring combat system, the nonsensical leveling, the criminally bad writing to the most unlikable protagonists we've ever seen in a Final Fantasy game it all just amounts to a horrible pretentious mess. Every game in the 13 line had their own problems from the first game being stuck to a giant hall way, 13-2 having a god modding Gary Stu villain on top of one of the worst time travel stories ever created. (Even considering Japan's apparently horrible track record with Time travel stories, for every Madoka Magica and Crono Trigger there's at least 20 Inuyashas and of course the infamous Endless 8 fiasco!) Lightning Returns even takes the message of FF 7, shits all over it and turns Lightning already one of the most unlikable and boring protagonists and turns her into a god damn robot. Supposedly removing all of her emotions and creating a loli version of her to cause chaos whose origins are horrible contradictory and; ugh the more I try to discuss Lumina the more my head starts to split from all the convoluted and contradicting information.

Needless to say FF13 and its sequels seems to have almost killed my interest in the FF franchise which was pretty small to begin with. For the record I've only played 6, 8 (the worst i've actually played) 9 (aka the best one) 10, and some of 10-2. I just hope that Lighting and none of the characters from 13 ever make it into Kingdom Hearts 3. Whenever that'll come out which of course was delayed because Square for some horribly dumb reason pushed that game back to focus on shitting out these turds. So yes Final Fantasy XIII is to blame for Kingdom Hearts 3 being pushed back for so long, fuck you Lightning and the robot horse you rode in on!

 #9 Mass Effect 3

Two words can describe every single thing wrong with Mass Effect 3, Electronic Arts. Once again the Unicron of the gaming industry has claimed another victim by getting rid of Mass Effects head writer, replacing him with a guy who hated Mass Effect with the passion of a million flaming hemorrhoids, let him take the franchise and flush it down the toilet by chucking your Shepards history out the window, retconning almost everyone and giving one of the absolute worst endings in recent history. On top of all that they slammed in Multiplayer and online passes to really piss everybody off. Also if you signed onto EA's servers you've most likely been hacked because their security is absolute flaming monkey poop.

Now the reason this is so low on the list is that I was never into Mass Effect in the first place. I'm a Sony guy and since Mass Effect 1 didn't come out on the PS3 until the collection pack was released I never bothered to care. I mean I tried the Mass Effect 2 demo and was repelled almost immediately, from the intimidating character creation screen to the mountains of data logs dumped onto my lap with all these terms and events that I had no idea about it was just the absolute worst way to entice someone new into the franchise. It was like you were transferred to a new class and on your first day you were given a test that you had no prior knowledge about and the teacher hates your guts and couldn't give a shit whether you knew the material or not.

Like "who the hell is Cerberus, why was I brought back to life, why did that bitch shoot that guy, why are robots after me, what is going on?!" Personal history with the franchise aside I do know a bad sequel when I hear it and when EA is involved you know it's going to suck something fierce. Now before you even ask, no I am not getting Mass Effect Andromeda because I refuse to give EA my money. All that's left is to paraphrase Spoony and say this "oh fuck you EA you killed Mass Effect fuck you!"

#8 Sly 4 Thieves in Time

As I said before I'm a big fan of Sly Cooper and I really was enjoying this Game, especially since it gave my PS Vita something to do aside from playing Persona 4 Golden and PS1 rpgs. That is until we got to the fourth level. The villain in that level was a robot called the Black Knight and we later find out the Knight was just a suit controlled by Bentley's girlfriend Penelope. Yep she betrayed Bentley, sold their time travel technology to Le Paradox the big bad for this game and was going on about how she and Bentley could have made a fortune in weapons development but figured that since Sly was holding Bentley's potential with his moral code she decides to help Le Paradox destroy the Cooper family line. Now considering everything that happened in Sly 3 this twist comes out of nowhere and feels like a slap in the face to Bentley and fans of his, that it just drags the whole game down with it.

Personal issues aside there's another narrative problem, namely with some of the ancestors you play as. Aside from Bob and Tennessee Kidd the rest of the ancestors have techniques that they shouldn't know namely Rioichi, Sir Galith and Salim knows Tennessee's rail run and slide techniques and Gallith and Salim knowing Rioichi's ninja spire jump. The ancestors also know their own exclusive techniques which are never mentioned before in the Thevius Racoonus. I mean if the ninja spire jumps are used before Rioichi you think they'd be written before his time where he could have transcribed how to perform his dragon jump instead of something everyone in the Cooper family would have known and perfected before him?

This game also has gameplay problems on top of everything else. I know most people have problems with the motion controls but you can just turn them off. But the developers clearly were trying to do something with the six axis function of the PS3 and Vita, so all that effort can just go out the window. But the biggest problem is the final boss fight. Now the Sly games have had varying degrees of success with their final bosses, the best being Dr M in my opinion. But Le Paradox, just some platforming and quick time events. Your final boss is a quick time event, that gets this spot on the list just for that. Now to wait until Sly 5 shows up and hopefully fixes this mess, you all know it's coming the secret ending makes it clear as crystal, so all that's left to do is wait and see.

#7 Batman Arkham Knight

The PC version was complete guano and that alone deserves a spot on this list. Though there are some other reasons on top of that, most people didn't like the Batmobile and the repetitive fights against the tank drones. The two main villains aren't as interesting as the true villain of Arkham Knight AKA Joker. Scarecrow just drones on and on about fear and what not and as for the titular Arkham Knight, anyone who knows anything about Batman can tell who it is from the first time he opens his mouth. Yep angsty boy himself Jason Todd, though this is one of those cases where they use him correctly, as a villain who stands as a living reminder of one of Batman's greatest failures instead of trying to make him an anti-hero who never shuts his mouth.

His depiction here isn't as good as "Batman Under the Red Hood" but it's still good. Also the Season Pass and DLC was crap. Though thankfully the Riddler Challenges were nowhere near as taxing and numerous as Arkham City. As a conclusion to the Arkham trilogy it's passable but the PC version was simply unforgivable and it would be unprofessional of me to ignore such a horrible crime inflicted on 1 3rd of your paying customers. So WB can choke on the Jokers ashes as far as I care for the horrible butchering of the PC version of the conclusion to one of your biggest franchises.

#6 Kingdom Hearts RE:Coded

Sorry I know this is technically a spinoff but there are events in this game that are cannon to the whole franchise so yes it's a sequel as much as Kingdom Hearts 2 so it's on the list. Gameplay wise this is the weakest game in the franchise and also the ugliest looking. Though considering that the game involves removing bugs from the data in Jiminys journal I can't help but think that was part of the joke. We don't even play as Sora in this one just a data copy of him that eventually becomes his own being. The only saving grace for this is that they remastered all the relevant cutscenes and plot points of this game in the 2.5 collection as a 3 hour long movie so now people don't even have to go through the trouble of hunting down the old DS game on Amazon anymore. And really when the only redeeming feature of your game is not having to play it, you know it sucks.

#5 Mega Man X6

I know people would have expected X7 to take this spot but I can't since at least X7 experimented with the 2d to 3D gameplay. It didn't work and they hid the ability to play as fucking X behind the grinding busy work of rescuing Reploids in the Maverick stages. But guess where that mechanic was taken to its absolute worst degree? You guessed it X6, my spot for this list.

Keiji Inafune cleary wrote and planed for the Mega Man X series to stop with X5 and holy crap does it show here. The plot is uninteresting, the maverick bosses are boring and unnecessary as if you take out High Max in any of the stages you can jump straight to Gate's stages. But since you have to get all of X's armor parts to make it through the bosses are still required to be beaten so why even give us the option to skip them? Also yes the Reploid rescue system is back and even worse since not only do some of them have upgrade components but there's the new Nightmare Virus that turns them into enemies if you take too long. Also if they turn bad they're gone for good and so is their potential upgrade, and since most of the ones that do have them are hidden in very hard to reach places and the Nightmare is more often then not very close once you see them, you're screwed.

Not to mention every two stages or so Dynamo shows up to fight X and Zero if nothing else because Capcom didn't know what to do with the guy after X5 and they wanted to pad the game out. Speaking of reoccurring bad guys Sigma is easily the worst he's ever been in the series here. Now narratively I get why he's all broken and crazy here but still why did you include him here anyway? I mean in X5 it was very heavily hinted that he was working with some remaining figment of Dr Wily so why not go with that? Have Wily be the real mastermind as he pretended to be loyal to Gate, stab him in the back and and admit to using Gate and Sigma as part of some grand final world domination scheme as well as completing his revenge against Light by destroying X as well as Zero, himself a failed experiment in Wily's eyes?

Maybe even have him play a part in Axl's story in X7 as maybe being the one who created Axl's copy chip and designed him based on Bass' designs? But no we get this poorly designed cash grab instead. X6 is my pick as the worst in the X series and that's my two cents on that. But we still have five more bad sequels to deal with people. Tokusatsu Review: Chōjin Sentai Jetman Part 2: Vyram it up your ass!

Alright folks I finally managed to finish Jetman. What did I think? It's good, really good but the best, well I haven't seen the rest of Sentai so I really can't judge but yeah it can be really good once you get past its problems and yeah this series has some problems. They mostly center around the villains and their general lack of motivation, backstory and just the wasted opportunity for character development for Radiguet and Tran/Tranza. The heroes also have some problems from Ryu being a hypocritical asshole, Kaori keeping the stupid love triangle going and Aia not addressing Ryu's mental issues throughout the show and not interfering when issues needed to be brought up to improve the team dynamic and generally keeping them from constantly being at each other's throats.

Let's start with Vyram since I have the most issues with them. Now their monsters were certainly interesting as these aren't the types of monsters that you see in modern Sentai. They're more like Venjix's attack bots in that they generally display no personality and mostly communicate with grunts or noises matching their theme. At least until they upgrade to the bio dimensional beasts where we see more monsters with personalities. Though if you read the bio dimensional beasts names on the Sentai wiki page tell me this music doesn't pop into your heads.

As I was watching the show it was interesting to measure their effectiveness compared to the general who sent it out. It seemed the more the general sent out the less interesting or developed they turned out but it was interesting to discover certain themes and methodology each member utilized. We'll start with my favorite of the quartet, Grey.
"Now I may not smoke everyday but when I do, I make it a Marlboro."
He sent out a total of three monsters ( Vending Dimension, Time Mammoth and Sniper Cat)  throughout the series and by contrast was more inclined to enter the fray himself and his plans were the closest to succeeding. Less is more when it comes to Grey. Sadly this is also reflected in his backstory or lack of one in this case. Who exactly built this guy and why did they program him to act the way he did? I guess sometimes the lack of explanation makes a character more interesting and Grey is a prime example of this, we know so little about him but his charisma, demeanor and presence just makes up for it.

His relationship with Maria is a classic Romeo and Juliet story, one a human turned evil, the other a killer robot with a noble heart, he would do anything to protect her even going so far as willing to lose her forever so long as she lived and when she died, yeah not gonna lie I got a little sad as his tears (seriously) dissolved her corpse into the sea ( again seriously) and his final fight with Gai was a great end to a great antagonist.

Next is a central piece of the shows love triangle Maria/Rie.
Is it just me or does her outfit make you think of the Stay puft Marshmallow man?
From when we first saw Maria we knew it was Rie. Which set up whether Ryu can save her from Radiguet or would he have to kill his true love to save the earth. She sent out 8 monsters ( Mirror, Diamond, Camera, Voice, Fortune and Trash Dimension, Light Armadillo and Adhesive Cockroach) and was the one who upgraded the dimensional bugs into the bio dimensional bugs showing that despite being human her brainwashing was so effective she was a master of alien bio tech. Her tactics focused around vanity, greed and personal attacks with her monsters.

Maria always came off like she had something to prove with her being the only female, human member of the group but also since Radiguet kept insisting that she was his. Maria was brought back as Rie once before her last time but the only reason she reverted back was due to plot contrivance. Like Inoue didn't know how to end the subplot so he kept it going through shear stupidity. Let's really look at this shall we? Ryu has Rie back and is fighting one of the demons (not worth mentioning aside from confirming that Rie is Maria due to her changing back when she was attacked by one) so the logical thing would be to take her aboard Jet Icarus so he could be brought back to Skycamp after the fight.

But since this is Inoue town that didn't happen allowing Radiguet to brainwash her again back to Maria. Which serves to make Ryu look like a complete dumbass. I'll get into what I think would have been better for her character later but suffice to say the only good part of her character was how she influenced Grey. He loved to hear her music and seemed to cooperate more with each other's plans. But then again when the other two people are a sexist one note asshole and a super smart brat, the robot with a smoking problem seems to be the better choice.

Speaking of Casanova let's get into my problems with the good count.
Yeah this is from the Non Cannon Manga sequel where Radiguet possesses Tranza's body (getting to that) and while he doesn't look like an idiot he now looks like he was resurrected by Studio Clamp. Hang on, a blue skinned pretty boy alien who can transform into a horrible monster... Sure is Zarbon in here.
He is just evil for evil sake and any development he could have had was flushed down the toilet. What we did get however was at least enough of a credible threat to justifiably hate and take seriously. However the guy seems to be incredibly shortsighted, for example sending out the Bug Mother, attacking Juza half cocked and killing his human love interest just so he can get his hands on the Semimaru egg, one of the reasons why he betrayed Juza in the first place; just so he could use it. His 9 monsters were the Bug Mother, Fighter, Road, And House Dimension, Semimaru, Armor Snake, Poison Gas Mouse, Torpedo Piranha, Meteor BEM, and Leach Drill. His monsters tended to focus more on general offense if not to kill humans then the Jetmen.

We get almost no development for this stupid looking would be god. He had a chance when his memories were removed by Juza and he found a human love interest, but that lasted all of one episode he killed Juza, got Semimaru's egg, killed his girlfriend and then BAM business as usual. He started as an elitist dickhead and died an elitist dickhead. But that just leaves Tran/Tranza who I honestly wound up hating the most and not in a good way.
OH MY GOD look at that hair, now folks I've seen some really stupid hairstyles in my time but this is right up there with the top ten at least.
"Nothing nothing I OH MY GOD!" "DORARARARARARARARARARARARARARARA"
Moving on, perhaps to reflect my thoughts of him the second least developed villain wound up sending out the most monsters. Faucet, Fashion, Noodle, Bus, Paper, Vacuum and Dryer Dimension; Ant Bazooka, Laser Lizard, Hammer Chameleon, G2, Veronica and Great Tomato King. When he was Tran he was a sadistic and impulsive brat who saw those around him as toys and thus his monsters were less made to cause death and destruction but more as tools to aid in his sadistic fun. Tranza was just the same brat in a grown mans body, showcased when he discarded G2 when it didn't work right away when he was in the midst of his robotics research when any normal researcher would have more likely kept G2 to improve on what went wrong before moving on to the next project, you know work out the bugs in the prototype before working on the next model.

His end was karmic but aside from that he started a sadistic brat and ended a broken shell of a man. But as I said before aside from Grey there really wasn't much to Vyram which could have been fixed by making Juza part of the main cast and rewriting things a bit. Based on their full title and that Radigut is referred to as a Count my theory as to who they are is that they're just a group of aristocrats from another dimension conquering dimensions for fun. Like how British nobility used to have hunting parties the Vyram's conquering could be their version of a fox hunt. So my revisions is to make Tran and Tranza brothers, their mother Juza and Radiguet their advisor who is undermining Tran behind his back when the initial assault begins.

Eventually Tran gets sick of Radiguts crap and calls in his mother to put him in his place, Radigut turns human like before but stretched out longer like lasting about 5-6 episodes before he regains his memories seeing a fight between Juza and the Jetmen. He gets his full memories back but instead of killing his human girlfriend he just walks away his girlfriend joining the Jetmen as a supporting character trying to bring Radigut back because she still sees the man inside the monster. Radigut helps the Jetmen kill Juza but afterwords starts to question whether coming back to Vyram was worth it at the cost of his true love. After Juza dies Tran then summons his older brother Tranza, the two exile Radigut for good and become the new leaders of Vyram. Radigut's girlfriend is killed in one of Tanzas schemes prompting Radigut to still drive Tranza insane and Tran is left to take care of his broken brother.

Then all that's left is a heartbroken conquer with absolutely nothing to lose and wanting to either finish what he started or die in battle against his greatest foes the Jetman, and as he dies he thanks them for letting him at least die on the battlefield. But that was what could have been instead of what we got and what we had worked, but could have been far better.
Or far worse.
