Our next topic of discussion is the unholy fuzzball himself, Kyubey.
The incubator as it's actually called is a race of aliens who's sole mission is to gather the energy released by magical girls who fall into despair and become witches to prevent entropy.
The reason why they only target human girls is through their research they've discovered that human females between the ages of 5 and 16 experience great fluctuations of hope and despair in their lives. The incubators then appear to those who either can potentially generate a sufficient amount of despair or to those who are desperate enough to make the contract, making them less like deals with the devil but more like an answer from on high. They then make the contract, incubator rips out their soul to become the soul gem and BAM more wood to throw on the universe's fire.
The incubators are essentially the unholy mixture of Mr Spock, Shang Tsung and a Furby.
Now you may be asking why did they come to earth in the first place? Because emotions are needed to generate the energy the incubators need and like pure blood Vulcans they only know logic, in fact emotions are considered to be a mental illness within their collective. The way they work is by giving prospective girls the basic explanation but not the full truth, because who would honesty agree to give up their souls for a single wish only to eventually become the monsters they hunt unless they're truly desperate? They only tell them that to become a magical girl they make one wish to it, it's granted and in exchange they take up the job of defeating witches. Now they don't have the capacity to lie so they only tell the truth selectively to push the girls to its true goal. The incubators by our definition are sociopaths but unfortunately I can't hate them as much as I should. They're just doing what they do to keep the universe going I mean what's the sacrifice of about 1000 or so compared to the rest of the universe?
and that only makes me more mortified by them, by all accounts they are the villains but they aren't, not if you take their motivations and their ultimate end goal into account. But still FUCK YOU KYUBEY!!!
From that satanic fuzzball to our title character Madoka.
So, much, Pink!!!
Aside from being dangerous with too much pink Madoka by all accounts has nothing all that special about her, she's a middle school girl with friends and has her own issues of what she wants to do with her life like most people. Yet Homura and the incubators want her badly! The incubators want her to become a magical girl and Homura is willing to let the world rot just to make sure she doesn't contract. At first when Sayaka contracts she seems like she'd just be the best friend sidekick that one would normally see in a magical girl show. Yet as the events unfold Madoka and Sayaka's life start to spiral out of control and it seems like every time Madoka tried to help it only made things worse until Sayaka crossed the point of no return, Homura and Kyoko bring back her corpse and after Sayaka's funeral she is completely devastated. There's a very good reason why Madoka is the current face of the "break the cutie" trope on TV Tropes.
The reason why the incubators want her to contract is all due to Homura. See her power is the ability to manipulate time.
Such as I, Dio? I Dio may have lost to a vampire hunter maid but that doesn't mean that I Dio could lose to one such as her.
Nope her time manipulation powers make The World look like a cheap stopwatch and on top of that she has an arsenal bigger then every single 80's action hero who ever existed.
But like every great rock star she didn't start out that way.
Homura started out as a very sickly girl who was about to be eaten by a witch until she was saved by two magical girls, Mami and her apprentice of one week; Madoka Kaname. Like Madoka and Sayaka as we know them Homura tagged along with the two afterwords and the three became close friends, that is until an insanely powerful witch called Walpurgisnacht appeared in town. This witch is a legend among magical girls; a witch so powerful it doesn't need a labyrinth and its mere presence is enough to cause hurricanes, earthquakes and drive people with weak hearts to kill themselves out of shear despair. Madoka died fighting this beast and Homura was devastated losing the one person who honestly cared for her. The incubator then appeared before Homura and asked if she would like to make a wish. She wished for the chance to go back to redo her first meeting with Madoka, so she can be the one to protect her and not the other way around, so she was sent back in time one month and sure enough she met with Madoka again and joined with her and Mami. However no matter how many times she tried, no matter how much stronger she got, no matter how many of the same witches she killed over and over again, and no matter how many times she saw her friends die and Madoka driven to despair Homura never gave up. She kept repeating the same month over and over again in a desperate attempt to save the one person on earth she loves more then anyone else. But because of this the more power accumulated in Madoka. With every overlapping time loop focused on saving Madoka Homura kept putting more karmic power on Madoka's soul to the point where if she wanted to she could rewrite the universe if she wanted. With every timeline Madoka's potential grew until she became the most powerful Magical girl on earth, and by proxy the most powerful witch who ever existed; powerful enough to destroy the entire earth in 10 days.
You might be thinking, "why didn't she try to warn them about Kyubey?" Because every time Homura tried to warn the others about Kyubey's true motives they either didn't believe her or when confronted with the truth they broke down or as previously said with Mami go nuts and try to kill each other. But no matter who lives or dies the end is always the same Madoka + Whalpurgusnaught = Death or history eraser button with pink hair. And she'll have to face the hard fact that her efforts are ultimately... what's the word I'm looking for again?
Thank you, and when she finally realizes that fact she'll finally become a witch and Madoka/the world is doomed. Now even with all that said there is a way out of this, but because this is such a major twist and of course how the show ends I'm not going to spoil it but I will say this; even in the deepest darkness hope will shine through. But I will give it away later when I discuss the movie Rebellion. Oh boy rebellion, for now let's say that it's this series' equivalent of End of Evangelion only good and not made out of spite to people telling the series' creator to kill himself because his show didn't go in the direction the fans wanted it to. (No joke Hideki Anno got death threats over End of Evangelion, wtf?) So for now look forward to me covering more of this series' spin offs in the following months, starting with... well the one I've been mentioning throughout this two parter. To think that this franchise has been around for only 5 years and hopefully it's still going. I mean if there's more manga spin offs and video games (that unfortunately aren't getting ported over here! Not bitter just need a wish here or two there and it should be good.) being made to this day and a potential new movie coming out; eh I'm guessing somebody must still be into this little show, including me. Now I'm sure that some of you have a similar story to mine about how you stumbled across this show. You were in your college dorm room when your little brother tells you about this amazing new anime. At first you're put off when you hear it's a magical girl series since the last time you saw a show in that genre was Sailor Moon on Toonami back in the day and maybe catching a glimpse or two of Princess Tutu when there were episodes on Comcast on demand back around 2006 or something and you decided you wouldn't give that genre a second glance since well given the general demographic of those shows. But he insists, you say "what the hell got some time to kill" so you catch the dub on a streaming site and three episodes later BAM!!! You've started the journey to discovering one of your all time favorite anime, as well as the only magical girl anime that you can stand, aside from Kill La Kill (but that's more of a parody of the concept as well as a topic for another day).
Now I know the show is five years old by this point but this is one of those shows that I feel deserves every spoiler warning I can give it since it is one of those shows you need to come in as cold as Mr Freeze's tombstone to fully enjoy. As for dub or sub, I've always been a dub man myself but hey whatever floats your boat. Now since this review is going to be as spoiler free as I possibly can I'm not going to be talking about the show itself since not only is it 12 episodes long but if you can watch it on Netflix, Crunchyroll, PSN store, iTunes Hulu, the clouds, I don't want to hear any complaints about "I don't have the time" boo-hoo-hoo so I'm just going to give my two cents on the characters and how I feel about them.
We'll start off with the character that I feel kinda gets the shaft, Miss drill curls herself Mami Tomoe.
You know, just looking at her makes one thing pop into my head.
Anyone else, or is it just me? Anyway Mami first shows up to save Madoka and Sayaka's butts from some of the witch Gertrude's familiars and since Kyubey says the two have the potential to be Magical Girls she offers the two the chance to tag along with her and see what it is exactly that they're getting into. Now in terms of her relevance in the story Mami serves the purpose of showing Madoka and Sayaka and by proxy the audience what it is to be a magical girl, the risks involved with making a contract and some of the sacrifices that come with it. She also demonstrates the true danger that the witches and their familiars present, that these are less like Sentai monsters and more like the Horrors from Garo.
They kill indiscriminately, embody pure uncompromising evil and that even the most skilled warrior can be killed by one if they don't have their head in the game.
Brief aside here I love the design of the Witches, these are some of the most interestingly designed monsters I've seen in quite some time. No two looking exactly alike and range in animation styles, from GC to negative space to looking like if Terry Giliam tried to become a Sentai villain. Most of these creatures look like if a Dada art gallery was trying to kill you. Not to mention once you learn the truth abut where these things come from there's a whole new level of symbolism to analyze. Needless to say, I love these things.
Back to Mami, she seems to be, well the most human, she didn't become a magical girl under traditional circumstances (for these types of MGs anyway), lives with the regret of her wish and tries to mask the loneliness of the death of her parents by focusing her time on her magical girl duties. This is expanded on in her spin off "The different story" but suffice to say she tries to make friends with other magical girls but it doesn't end well since it turns out that she's an oddity among the MGs. Their general attitude seems to be that they only fight witches for the sake of their own wishes above saving people from them or being eaten by familiars. Yet from that standpoint Mami really is no different, she says that she fights to protect people but in reality she fights to drown out the fact that she is completely alone aside from Kyubey. This loneliness also drives her to do some rather unsettling things when it comes to Madoka and Sayaka.
Not like that!
Knowing full well the dangers of what it means to make a contract she was willing to coax Sayaka and Madoka into wishing just so she wouldn't be lonely anymore. While this is still understandable it still doesn't do much to redeem her from a hard logical standpoint. While she can talk the talk and walk the walk we see that her mental scars run deeper then first thought, in another timeline (yes I'll cover that later) when the final truth of magical girls is revealed to the group Mami goes nuts and tries to kill the others before being put down by Madoka. As horrible as that sounds Mami is ultimately the most compassionate of the five since knowing what lies at the end of the road and having what little stability crumble around her she does what most people would consider to be the best option by trying to kill the others.
And the fact that death is honestly the best option over the alternative says how messed up and horrible being a magical girl in this world ultimately is.
So with Mami's attempted murder spree this leads to her only victim. Her former protege Kyoko Sakura, oh boy Kyoko.
Behold the most powerful bum you'll ever see aside from Al Simmons.
Among the core five Kyoko has at best the second most tragic backstory. She enters the story after hearing that Mami was killed and that Sayaka has taken her place with Kyoko's goal initially to kill Sayaka and take over Mitakihara's hunting grounds. Now being far more experienced in combat then the greenhorn Sayaka she nearly does kill her until Homura intervenes. The second encounter between the two reveals yet another truth, that the soul gems that the girls draw their power from, really does live up to the name on the tin. These girls are ultimately zombies and if they move more then 100 meters from their bodies it shuts down and is nothing more then a corpse without the magical girl in close proximity to animate it.
While Kyoko reacts like someone told her she was having burgers for dinner, Sayaka, yeah not so much so to try and clue her in Kyoto tries to show Sayaka why she is the way she is by telling her backstory. Her father was a priest who drove his family to starvation when he started preaching his own ideas and was excommunicated by the church. Desperate, Kyoko wished to Kyubey for people to listen to her father's preachings. It worked well for a while but when her father learned the truth he started drinking heavily, called Kyoko a demon for brainwashing people to listen to him and killed himself along with Kyoko's mom and sister right in front of her and setting their church on fire. So yeah, after a backstory like that anyone would change their outlook a tad.
The details are elaborated on in The Different Story as well but suffice to say Kyoko turned into the one looking out for #1. So why is she trying to help Sayaka you may be asking? Because she reminds her of her when she first contracted, eager to fight for justice and their loved ones and making their wish for the sake of said loved ones. She just wants to stop Sayaka before the wish blows up in her face. Needless to say it didn't work out that way but she still tried.
Kyoko is the type of character that takes precisely zero crap from anyone. She's a loaner who had the world take a dump on her but she managed to brush the shit off and fling it right back at anyone who pisses her off. Even if said person ceases to be a human and is nothing more then a monster. She then exits the show on her own terms by using all of her power to destroy a witch in a desperate attempt to save someone she cares for, dying as the person she was and not what she became.
Speaking of Sayaka let's cover her next.
We see her as your typical teenage girl, happy with friends and has a crush on her childhood friend Kyosuke but doesn't know when to share her feelings with him.
After Mami died Sayaka decided to finally make her wish after Kyosuke told her to stop seeing him. See he was a talented violinist who was caught in a car crash; while he'll mostly recover the damage done to his hand is far too severe to ever play again.
Sounds familiar.
The doctors flat out told him that unless magic and miracles exist he'd never play again and with Sayaka constantly showing up and bringing him CDs of violin performances it didn't exactly cheer him up so much as pour salt and lemon juice in his wound. So taking that to heart Sayaka made her wish to completely fix Kyosuke's hand. From there one would think that Sayaka would follow the traditional route of a magical girl protagonist, however after her first fight with Kyoko she started to distance herself from Madoka. After Madoka accidentally exposed the soul gem rule Sayaka lamented that she could never be with Kyosuke since she's essentially a zombie and cried her eyes out on Madoka's shoulder. From there things went from bad to worse.
After Kyubey told her that magical girls can block out any pain they feel she started to follow Guts' fighting style and go into berserker frenzies when fighting witches, even going so far as not using the grief seeds she's collected to prove that she's above Kyoko's methodology. This of course causes her to lash out at Madoka and drive her away when she was only trying to help. But to be fair it isn't exactly helpful since she was saying pretty much the exact wrong things to her. These and several other events all culminate in the reveal of the ultimate truth of Magical girls. First time I saw this scene my jaw dropped, honest as sunshine on this.
It was so obvious and yet, just WOW! I mean way to hide something in plain sight! Unfortunately Sayaka, while she claimed the best of intentions was just like Mami, she fought to hide and avoid facing the truth until it blew up in her face.
You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Yep, this is it folks, time for me to nut up or shut up. See due to recent events in my life I've decided to actually load the chamber, give it a spin and see if I can actually compete with the big dogs in the world of internet critique and humor. Now I have no idea if this will actually amount to anything; but then again I'm more then certain that this exact thought crossed the mind of people like Lewis Lovhaug, James Rolfe, Doug Walker, Brad Jones, Ez Peterson, Bennet White, Noah Antwilder, Jirard Khalil, Jim Sterling, Joe Vargus and Jon Jafari along with everyone who I've forgotten to mention who has at least a tiny bit more success then meand look at where they are now. I'm betting that when they started way back when they had no idea that their passion would become their carriers. Now I know fully well that I'm not going to be as big as these guys overnight, they've had at least a five year head start so what better time for me to try and catch up? Time to plant the seed and watch the tree grow, I just hope that you all like what blossoms and hope against hope that you contribute to preserving it.

When did Takeru get the Michael Jackson Eyecon?
Zyuohger and Ghost. It's been a long road but here we are the 40th and 45th anniversary of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider respectively and man has the road been bumpy. Sure some parts were smoother then others but man these years were hard; at least when it came to Sentai. After Gokaiger we had Gobusters and while some people including me liked it apparently the toy sales in Japan told a far different story. The critical reception wasn't much better either so after Gobusters we had Kyoryuger, Toqger and Ninninger.
I already gave my thoughts of Kyoryuger and Toqger, one was flawed but enjoyable and the other makes me want to destroy the planet just to erase the fact that it ever existed. I'll give you a guess which one I'm talking about. It seems Saban agrees with me since after Dino Charge (which is better then Kyoryuger in my opinion) they're skipping Toqger and adapting Ninninger instead. As for Ninninger the critical reaction seems to be my reaction to Toqger. All my anger and frustration towards Right seems to be everyone's response to Takaharu. While I wish people woke up earlier I'm glad that people are voicing their complaints and Toei realized that three years of idiot heroes in a row tend to piss people off if they're not written well, and guess what? They weren't!!! As a certain someone once said eventually the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
So after Ninninger received the worst ratings and toy sales in Sentai history Toei is putting their A team in charge of the anniversary series; Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger. Let me tell you Zyuohger and Ninninger is like night and day! This series has villains we can take seriously, simple yet effective designs and a red ranger that didn't eat paint chips after being dropped on his head after coming out of his alcoholic mother! The plot so far is there is an alternate earth called Zyuland that's populated by beast men called Zyumen that are anthropomorphic animals.
Behold, the world of Minecraft.
Our world and Zyuland are connected by the cube from the first bayformers movie renamed the Link Cube. One day a human zoologist named Yamato falls into Zyuland and meet the guardians.
Sela, a shark woman who while calm and cool takes no crap from anyone and is a fierce and serious fighter.
Leo a lion man (duh) is loud, honest, friendly and stands by his friends. He's basically Bryan Blessed with a tail.
Next is Tusk
No, not that Tusk.
I'm talking about the elephant man
NO, NO, NO!!!
This is our Tusk he's one of the smarter members of the team, cynical and always waits till he has enough information to act on his decisions.
Last is Amu the tiger woman.
Because we always need a cat girl apparently, don't know if she's a nun though, she's friendly, laid back and is optimistic but also a realist.
The four escort Yamato back to earth and were about to head back but the earth is attacked by intergalactic game hunters called the Deathgaliens who have declared earth and humans to be their 100th deathgame with the goal being to simply hunt humans into extinction. The four Zyumen take four small cubes that fell from the gate cube called Marks of the King and attack the invading forces. Eventually the marks give the four the ability to transform into the Zyuogers. Later Yamato joins in to help the four and it's revealed that the fifth Mark of the King has responded to him allowing him to transform as well revealing he has the abilities of an Eagle. Once the initial attack is repealed it's revealed that the Sixth mark is missing and without it the four Zyumen can't return to Zyuland, Yamato offers to let them stay with him and eventually all four accept, to blend in the Marks of the King give the four Zyumen a human form to blend into the human world.
Thus a pack is formed, the Doubutsu Sentai Zyuoger!
Like I said before I like the suits. Not as good looking as the Ninningers suits but not as horrible as the Toqger suits. They strike a good balance between unique with the animals on their chests but just seems to be dominated by the primary color. Though again the animals on the chests and the Gingaman esq zigzag design on the boots give it some black to balance it out. The helmets themselves nicely represent their respective animals, so all in all it works for me.
Now on to Ghost, this tells the story of Takeru Tenkuji, a young man who on his 18th birthday gets killed by a monster known as a Ganma. He does die but is given a second chance by a mysterious sage and his little sidekick Yurusen.
"Wehihihi"
The sage tells Takeru that if he gathers 15 luminary Eyecons
physical manifestations of souls
within the span of 99 days then he can have a wish granted which he can use to wish himself back to life. Sage then grants Takeru a belt and using his own soul becomes Kamen Rider Ghost. Aside from Ghost there's Makoto and his little sister Kanon, two of Takeru's childhood friends who were accidentally sent to the Ganma world due to an accident caused by the experiments of Takeru's father Ryu.
Makoto due to separating his soul from his body can also become a rider like Takeru becoming Kamen Rider Specter.
Originally helping the Ganma royal family after they took him and Kanon in when they landed in the Ganma world Makoto protected Alan's Ganma and sought the 15 Eyecons as well in order to wish Kanon back to life. To that end he tried to kill Takeru as he saw Ryu as responsible for what happened to him and Kanon and since Ryu's dead Takeru is the one on the receiving end of the Inego Montoya speech. Eventually he turned against the Ganma after Takeru used the wish to bring Kanon back to life.
Last but not least is Alan. Prince of the Ganma and current fugitive.
Initially he was in charge of the invading forces, working with a former colleague of Ryu named Saionji to create more ways for Ganma to cross into the human world, gathering the Eyecons for the wish as well as perfecting ways of enhancing the Ganma by empowering them with objects creating enhanced Ganma. Alan is adding his father Emperor Adonis in his plans of creating a "perfect world" out of the earth by exterminating humans. To that end he perfected an artificial driver based off of Specters driver becoming Kamen Rider Necrom. However his brother Adel staged a coup and said that Alan is the one responsible for killing Adonis; so now he's a wanted man on the run.
Ghost seems to have the opposite problems that people had with Drive. Drive was far too slow with its pacing and toy promos while Ghost is far too fast. It shifts the status quo so much there barely is one. First we got the Eyecons, next we resolved Kanon's death and reset the timer for Takeru, then we have a new general to deal with and his plans, then Alan becomes Necrom and you can see where this is going. The arcs seem to last at least 5 episodes before moving on to the next arc and plot point. This rushed pacing might stem from the fact that Ghost's head writer Takuru Fukuda used to write Ultraman, specifically Ultraman Max and Ultraseven X. See in Ultraman, modern series tend to fluctuate but with Max and Seven X they lasted 48 and 12 episodes respectively so the rushed pace makes sense there. But in Kamen Rider a series lasts at least 48 episodes so adding in more plot with a writer that's used to working on a series that might have a far smaller timeframe will undoubtedly result in not being able to stretch events out properly thus making everything seem rushed yet short at the same time. But that's just my theory it isn't to say that Ghost is bad, just had a few quirks to work out.
You may be wondering why I've just been giving my thoughts on 2016's series instead of the crossover. Well the problem is that there is no one hour special like with last year. Yep it seems that Toei's been listening to the complaints people have made about the specials and the crossovers are actually occurring in the series itself while continuing their own plot instead of implying it's taking place in a parallel world or some crap like that. The problem with this approach is that I don't have any special to make fun of and point out plot holes. Now all that's left is to hope that the Ichigo movie doesn't suck. But then again with Shinichiro Shirokura producing, Osamu Kaneda directing and Toshiki Inoue writing I don't have too much hope. Yeah I know Hiroshi Fujioka is writing as well but lets face it it's just window dressing to try and keep the fans' hope up. But the only way to tell is to wait and if it sucks then hey I can at least make up for this outing.
